Welcome to the Vorpommern-Rügen District

Welcome to the Vorpommern-Rügen District, a breathtaking district in the northeastern corner of Germany. Situated along the sparkling Baltic coast, this region is a masterclass in maritime charm, dramatic scenery and rich cultural heritage. Whether you want to relax in a luxurious coastal retreat or explore untamed landscapes, here is your complete guide to Vorpommern-Rügen.

??? History

Slavic roots and Danish rule

In the early Middle Ages, the West Slavic Rani tribe inhabited the island of Rügen and established a powerful pagan empire centered around the temple fortress of Cape Arkona. In 1168, the Danish king Valdemar I captured the fortress, Christianized the population and established the Principality of Rügen.

Hanseatic period and Swedish rule

The mainland center of Stralsund grew into a powerhouse of the Hanseatic League in the 13th and 14th centuries. After the Thirty Years' War, the region became part of Swedish Pomerania for almost 200 years before being incorporated into Prussia in 1815.

Modern echoes

The 19th century gave birth to the region's famous Bäderarchitektur (resort architecture) as wealthy city dwellers flocked to the coast. The mid-20th century left darker footprints, especially the colossal Prora complex – originally built by the Nazi regime as a massive socialist resort, which has since been transformed into modern holiday apartments, hotels and museums.
