Experience Elba: A gem in the Tuscan Archipelago

If you dream of a holiday that mixes rugged Mediterranean nature with a touch of Napoleonic history, Elba is the place for you. It is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and offers a much more relaxed, "wild" atmosphere than the mainland.

A layered history

Elba has been a strategic location for millennia due to its rich iron ore deposits.

Etruscans and Romans: Both civilizations exploited the island's extensive mining; you can still visit the ruins of Roman villas at Linguella and Grotte.

Cosimo I de' Medici: In the 16th century, he built the impressive fortifications of Portoferraio (originally called Cosmopoli).

Napoleon Bonaparte: The island's most famous resident. He was exiled here in 1814 and spent 300 days as the "Emperor of Elba", leaving behind two beautiful residences (Villa dei Mulini and Villa San Martino) and a surprisingly modernised infrastructure.

Your island escape: Nature and atmosphere

Imagine waking up in a private villa perched on a hillside overlooking the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. Elba is an island of contrasts: from the granite peaks in the west to the red earth of the mining districts in the east.

Whether you're looking for a luxurious holiday or a quiet family holiday, the island offers plenty of secluded villas with private pools tucked away in aromatic pine groves. From the elegant boutiques of Porto Azzurro to the colourful waterfront of Portoferraio, the island feels like a prestigious yet authentic Italian retreat.

Cucina Elbana: The taste of the island

The food here is honest, rustic and deeply connected to the sea and the mines.

Stoccafisso alla Riese: A rich dried fish stew with olives, pine nuts and capers.

Gurguglione: A local vegetable medley (similar to ratatouille) often served as a side dish.

Schiaccia Briaca: The "drunken cake", made with dried fruit, nuts and Aleatico wine.

Aleatico dell'Elba: A sweet, dark dessert wine that is the island's liquid gold.

Activities and magnificent nature

Elba is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

Monte Capanne: At 1,019 metres, it is the highest point. You can hike to the top or take the quirky yellow cable car for panoramic views of the archipelago.

Beaches: There are over 150 beaches. Sansone is famous for its white pebbles and crystal clear waters, while Fetovaia offers golden sand and a sheltered bay.

Diving and kayaking: The marine park is bustling with life; the crystal clear visibility makes it a prime spot for snorkelling.

Local festivals and traditions

Maggio Napoleonica (May): A month of reenactments and ceremonies in honour of Napoleon's arrival.

The Legend of Innamorata (July 14): A torchlight procession on the beach in Capoliveri, commemorating a 16th-century tale of lovers and pirates in love.

Grape Festival (Festa dell'Uva): Held in September in Capoliveri, it is a massive, theatrical competition between districts celebrating the grape harvest.
