Malcesine

Malcesine is an enchanting medieval village, perfectly nestled between the deep blue waters of Lake Garda and the dramatic mountain ridges of Monte Baldo. This scenic town serves as a premier holiday destination, welcoming travelers with its maze of cobbled streets, vibrant pastel-colored facades, and sun-drenched squares blooming with bougainvillea and Mediterranean greenery. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious lakeside villa with a private pool, a cozy vacation apartment located in the historic center, or a spacious vacation rental overlooking the endless olive groves, the town offers exceptional accommodations designed for first-class relaxation and pure indulgence under the Italian sun.

History

Malcesine’s roots date back to around 500 BC, when Etruscan tribes first settled along these fertile shores. Over the centuries, the territory passed between Roman, Lombard, and Frankish hands. Its strategic location made it a highly contested area, passing through the control of the Scaliger family of Verona in the 13th century, the Republic of Venice in 1405 and later the Austrian Empire. It was finally integrated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. This rich history completely shaped the fortified appearance of the village, which famously fascinated cultural figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the artist Gustav Klimt during their travels.

Typical foods and local specialties

Malcesine's gastronomy is a delicate blend of Alpine mountain traditions and fresh lakeside flavors, tightly bound together by the local Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil, known for its fruity and mild flavor.

Polenta Carbonera

A comforting, rich local specialty made from yellow cornmeal mixed with robust local mountain cheeses and generous amounts of extra virgin olive oil. The dish represents the true soul of the traditional mountain cuisine of the region.

Fresh lake fish

Menus throughout the town feature freshly caught fish straight from Lake Garda. This includes delicate species such as lavarello (whitefish), lake trout and sardines, often grilled with herbs or served as the flavourful Baccalà alla Gardesana.

Casàt cheese

A traditional, locally produced cow's milk cheese with a distinctive character. This cheese plays an absolute star in many regional recipes and is celebrated with pride across the area's many food festivals.
