Welcome!

'Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) is Italy's largest lake, a sparkling Mediterranean oasis tucked away at the foot of the Alps. Whether you're looking for a sightseeing adventure or a relaxing holiday, this region offers the perfect blend of "dolce vita" and rugged nature.

A glimpse into history

The lake's history is as deep as its waters (which reach 346 metres!). The area, known to the Romans as Lacus Benacus, is dotted with ruins, most notably the Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione - the remains of a massive Roman villa. Throughout the Middle Ages, the lake was of strategic value, leading to the construction of the iconic Scaliger castles that still guard towns such as Malcesine and Sirmione. In more modern times, the town of Salò served as the headquarters of Mussolini's government during the final years of World War II, adding a somber layer to the lake's rich historical tapestry.

Description and Nature

Imagine a landscape where azure waters meet emerald green hills. To the north, the lake is narrow and dramatic, surrounded by the Monte Baldo massif – often called the “Garden of Europe” for its rare alpine flora. As you move south, the basin widens into a sun-drenched Mediterranean climate where lemon groves, olive trees and vineyards thrive. For your itinerary, the “Riviera dei Limoni” (west) and the “Riviera degli Olivi” (east) offer a distinct ambiance. The air is often filled with the scent of jasmine, making it a truly picturesque place for a summer holiday.

Typical foods: A taste of the lake

The local cuisine is a "surf and turf" delight, blending fresh lake fish with hearty mountain flavors. Fish: Look for Carpione (a rare trout found only here), Lavarello (whitefish), usually grilled with local oil, and Bigoli con le sarde (thick pasta with sardines). The "green gold": Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil is world-famous for its light, fruity flavor. Specialties: Carne Salada (salted, thinly sliced ??beef), Tortellini di Valeggio, and citrus liqueurs like Limoncello. Wine: Serve your meal with a crisp Lugana white wine or a light Bardolino red wine.

Activities and Adventures

Lake Garda is an outdoor playground. Water sports: The North Sea (Torbole and Riva) is a mecca for windsurfing and sailing thanks to the reliable Ora and Peler winds. Hiking and cycling: Take the Monte Baldo cable car for high-altitude hikes, or ride the spectacular "floating" cycle path in Limone sul Garda. Relaxation: Visit the thermal baths of Sirmione (Aquaria) for a spa day or relax on the pebble beaches of Bardolino. Family fun: The southern states are home to Gardaland, Italy's largest theme park.

Shops and markets

Shopping here is a delightful mix of high-end boutiques and traditional stalls. Boutiques: Salò and Desenzano offer chic fashion and designer brands. Crafts: Look for hand-painted ceramics, leather goods and lemon-scented perfumes in Limone and Malcesine.

Weekly Markets: Almost every town has a morning market (usually 8am - 1pm). They are perfect for buying local honey, cheeses and souvenirs.

Festivals (2026 Highlights)

International Spring Festival (March/April): Folklore, music and parades across various towns on the lake.

Horizon Music Festival (June 12-13, 2026): A massive electronic music event on the beaches of Torbole.

Centomiglia (September): The most prestigious sailing race on the lake.

Wine and Grape Festivals: Late September and October (especially in Bardolino) celebrate the harvest with tastings and fireworks.
