Flaine is a ski resort located in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, within the Grand Massif ski area. Situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters (base village) and reaching up to 2,500 meters, it's approximately 1 hour from Geneva.
Uniquely modernist in design, Flaine is known for its car-free center and concrete buildings designed by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer (who also designed the Whitney Museum in New York). Flaine has a striking contrast to the traditional Alpine chalets found elsewhere.
History
Developed in the 1960s, Flaine was envisioned as a functional, integrated ski resort by Breuer and Éric Boissonnas (a geophysicist and financier).
Officially opened in 1969.
Flaine’s design focused on practicality and harmony with nature, pioneering environmental integration.
It houses open-air sculptures by artists like Picasso, Dubuffet, and Vasarely.
Typical Food
While Flaine is a modern resort, the local cuisine draws from Savoyard culinary traditions. Expect rich, hearty mountain dishes such as:
Tartiflette – potatoes, Reblochon cheese, lardons, and onions.
Raclette – melted cheese served with potatoes and charcuterie.
Fondue Savoyarde – melted cheese with white wine, eaten by dipping bread.
Diots – Savoyard sausages often cooked in wine.
Croûte Savoyarde – baked bread with cheese and white wine.
Blueberry tart – a typical Alpine dessert.
