History & Setting

Samnaun is a high Alpine village and valley (Samnauntal), in the far east of Switzerland, in the canton of Grisons (Graubünden).

Elevation is about 1,844 metres at the church level.

First used as seasonal pasture (alpages) by neighbouring villages (Tschlin, Ramosch) in early periods. Permanent farms are mentioned around 1220.

The valley was difficult to reach from within Switzerland for a long time; historically the only road access was via Austria.

Because of this isolation, in 1892 Samnaun was declared a duty-free zone (customs-free). Even after a road was built in 1912 connecting it to Swiss roads, the duty-free status remained.

Over time, tourism (both summer hiking and winter skiing) became one of the main economic pillars.

Nature & Environment

The Samnaun Alps region is rich in flora and fauna. Around 900 plant species between 1,400 m and 3,300 m elevation.

Among the plants: various alpine flowers, orchids, colorful anemones, gentians, edelweiss. There is a “plant path” with info boards and guided botanical walks.

Animal life includes red deer and mountain game, chamois, marmots, foxes, various birds of prey. Wildlife and bird watching are part of the summer program.

Landscapes: alpine meadows, rugged peaks, forests at lower levels (conifers etc.), pristine streams, huts & pastures. There are many mountain huts and alps with trails.

Typical Foods & Gastronomy

Because Samnaun is in Graubünden, with influence from the Engadine and neighbouring regions, its cuisine is alpine and hearty, using local ingredients. Here are some dishes & food experiences:

Samnauner mountain cheese — a semi-hard cheese matured 3-12 months. There is an Alpine show dairy you can visit with tastings.

Maluns — grated potatoes fried with flour and butter, served often with apple compote or regional cheese/cured meats.

Capuns — small parcels of chard leaves filled with a kind of dough, herbs, sometimes bits of dried meat; baked or boiled. Common in Graubünden.

Bündner Fleisch — cured meat from the region.

Engadine nut cake (Engadiner Nusstorte) — sweet, classic in the Engadine.

The restaurant Bündner Stube (in Chalet Silvretta) offers many of these regional specialities in a traditional setting.
