Chiemsee, known as the "Bavarian Sea", is the largest lake in Bavaria and the third largest in Germany. Nestled at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps, it is a region where royal history meets rustic charm and unspoiled alpine nature.

Description and Accommodation

Chiemsee is a prime destination for those seeking a mix of cultural sophistication and outdoor relaxation. The coastline is dotted with charming villages such as Prien am Chiemsee and Übersee.

For your stay, the region offers a wide range of holiday accommodation. You can find luxury villas with private saunas and lake views or cozy apartments and holiday homes equipped with modern amenities such as fully equipped kitchens, south-facing terraces and high-speed Wi-Fi. Many holiday apartments are family-friendly and offer garden access and proximity to the water, while traditional Bavarian chalets provide a more rustic atmosphere for a peaceful holiday.

History: The legacy of a "fairytale king"

The lake's history is dominated by King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

Herrenchiemsee Palace

Built on Herreninsel (Men's Island) in 1878, this palace was intended as a "Temple of the Beloved" for King Louis XIV of France, whom Ludwig greatly admired. It is an almost exact replica of Versailles, complete with a breathtaking Hall of Mirrors.

Frauenwörth Monastery

On the smaller Fraueninsel (Women's Island), there is a Benedictine monastery founded in 782 AD. It is still an active monastery and a symbol of the region's deep spiritual and artistic roots.

Nature and Activities

Chiemsee is a playground for nature lovers. The Achen Delta is a significant nature reserve for birdwatching, while the surrounding Chiemgau Alps offer endless trails.

On the water: Sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling (SUP) are incredibly popular. You can also take the Chiemsee-Schifffahrt (ferry) to hop between islands.

On land: A 64 km long cycle and hiking trail circles the lake. In winter, the nearby mountains offer excellent opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing.

Relaxation: Many villas and luxury apartments are located near the Prienavera Leisure Pool, which offers thermal baths and lake views.

Typical foods: A taste of the lake

The Bavarian cuisine here is strongly influenced by the lake's fresh water and the surrounding alpine pastures.

Steckerlfisch: Grilled fish (usually whitefish or trout) on a stick, a local specialty found in beer gardens.

Renke & Saibling: Freshly caught whitefish and Arctic char from the Chiemsee, often served smoked or pan-fried.

Chiemsee Marzipan: Traditionally handmade by the nuns of Frauenwörth Abbey.

Bayerisches Bier: Best enjoyed in a shady beer garden overlooking the water.

Festivals and Events

The region is deeply committed to its "Tracht" (traditional costumes) and local customs.

Herrenchiemsee Festival: A prestigious summer concert series held in the great hall of mirrors at the castle.

Island Christmas Market: The market on Fraueninsel is considered one of the most romantic in Germany and is only accessible by boat.

Georgiritt: A traditional horse pilgrimage held around Easter, with beautifully decorated horses and riders in historical costumes.

Maypole Raising: Like most of Bavaria, the villages around Chiemsee celebrate May 1st with traditional music, dancing, and the manual hoisting of a massive decorated tree.
