Garmisch-Partenkirchen: The Pearl of the Bavarian Alps

Located in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany's leading mountain destination, offering a perfect blend of rustic tradition and modern Alpine luxury.

Description & Stays

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a "tale of two cities" that merged for the 1936 Winter Olympics. Garmisch offers a more cosmopolitan atmosphere with shops and elegant cafés, while Partenkirchen retains its historic soul with cobblestone streets and "Lüftlmalerei" (vivid frescoes) adorning the facades of centuries-old buildings.

For those planning a vacation, the area is known for its variety of vacation rentals. You can find everything from sun-drenched apartments with balconies overlooking the Zugspitze to secluded villas and luxury chalets equipped with private saunas and hot tubs. Many holiday homes are designed in a traditional Alpine style with warm wooden interiors and modern kitchens, making them ideal for families or groups looking for a "home away from home" experience.

History

Garmisch and Partenkirchen, originally separate settlements, were forcibly united by decree in 1935 to host the IV Winter Olympics. Partenkirchen is located on the site of the ancient Roman city of Parthanum, an important stop on the trade route between Italy and Germany. Today, the Olympic ski stadium remains a monumental landmark of this history.

Typical dishes

Bavarian cuisine is hearty and meant to be enjoyed in a rustic Gasthaus or mountain hut:

Schweinshaxe: A crispy-fried pork shank, typically served with potato dumplings (Knödel) and sauerkraut.

Kaiserschmarrn: A grated, caramelized pancake topped with powdered sugar and plum compote - a must-try after a long hike.

Obatzda: A savory cheese spread made from Camembert, butter, and paprika, perfect with a fresh pretzel.

Weisswurst: Traditional Bavarian white veal sausage, usually eaten before dinner with sweet mustard.

Activities and Nature

Zugspitze: Climb Germany's highest peak (2,962 m) via the cogwheel train or the ultra-modern cable car for 360-degree views across four countries.

Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm): A breathtaking natural monument where you can walk through tunnels and over bridges while the water thunders 80 meters below.

Lake Eibsee: Often called the "Jewel of the Bavarian Alps" with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for a summer boat trip or a 7km scenic walk around its circumference.

AlpspiX: A curved viewing platform that towers over a 1,000m drop and offers a dizzying view of the Höllental valley.

Festivals and Events

The town is buzzing with life all year round with various events:

New Year's Ski Jump: Part of the prestigious Vierbahn tournament held annually at the Olympic Ski Jump.

Festwochen (summer festivals): In July and August, both Garmisch and Partenkirchen host dedicated festival weeks with traditional lederhosen, dirndls, brass bands and local beer.

Richard Strauss Days: An annual classical music festival in June in honour of the famous composer who lived in the town.

Christmas Markets: In December, the city transforms into a winter wonderland with stalls selling handmade ornaments and steaming mugs of Glühwein.
