Freiburg im Breisgau: The Jewel of the Black Forest

Freiburg im Breisgau is often called the "Jewel of the Black Forest," and for good reason. It's a city where medieval charm meets a sunny, forward-thinking university atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a cozy apartment in the historic center or a luxury villa on the edge of the forest, Freiburg offers the perfect base for exploring southwest Germany.

History

Freiburg was founded in 1120 by the Dukes of Zähringen and became wealthy through silver mining in the nearby Black Forest. Its history is a tug-of-war between empires:

Habsburg rule: For centuries, the city was a loyal outpost of the Austrian House of Habsburg.

Bächle: These iconic mini-canals that run along the streets were designed in the 12th century to provide water for firefighting and watering livestock.

Rebirth: While much of the city was destroyed in 1944 during World War II, the Freiburger Münster (cathedral) miraculously survived. The city was carefully rebuilt to preserve its medieval structure.

Description and Accommodation

Freiburg is famous for being one of Germany's greenest and sunniest cities. The Altstadt (old town) is a pedestrian's dream, filled with cobblestone squares and gabled houses.

Stay in style: For a first-class experience, you can find a Stadtvilla (city villa) with a private garden and jacuzzi in quiet suburbs like Herdern or Günterstal.

Vacation rentals: If you prefer the heart of the action, many vacation rentals (Ferienwohnungen) are tucked away in historic buildings and offer balconies with views of the cathedral's spires. Many vacation rentals are pet-friendly and feature modern amenities like high-speed Wi-Fi and fully equipped kitchens for a true "home away from home" feel.

Typical foods

Baden's cuisine is widely considered the best in Germany, heavily inspired by its French neighbors.

"Lange Rote": The characteristic 35 cm long red sausage sold at the Münsterplatz market. Order it "mit" (with) or "ohne" (without) onion.

Spätzle & Maultaschen: Soft egg noodles and tasty meat-filled dumplings.

Black Forest Cake: You haven't lived until you've tried a piece of Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte in its birthplace.

Badischer Wein: The region is a paradise for wine lovers, especially for Gutedel and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).

Activities and festivals

Freiburgers love to celebrate life outdoors.

Schlossbergbahn: Take the funicular up the Schlossberg for panoramic views of the city and the Rhine Valley.

Markets: The daily Münstermarkt is a sensory overflow of flowers, crafts and food.

Important festivals:

Freiburg Wine Festival (July): A massive celebration of local vineyards around the cathedral.

Fasnet (Feb/March): The Alemannic carnival with traditional wooden masks and parades.

Christmas market (Nov/Dec): One of the most atmospheric in Germany.

Sea You Festival (July): A major electronic music festival on the nearby Tunisee.

Nature

You are at the gateway to the Black Forest.

Schauinsland: Reach the 1,284 m high peak via Germany's longest loop railway for views all the way to the Swiss Alps.

Dreisam River: Perfect for a "Bächle picnic" or a bike ride along the banks.

Hiking and biking: Hundreds of kilometers of trails start just on the outskirts of town and lead to hidden waterfalls and rustic mountain cabins.
