Overview & History
Location & geography: Pontresina is a mountain resort village in the Maloja Region, in the canton of Grisons (Graubünden), eastern Switzerland. It sits at ~1800 m above sea level.
Name & origin: First mentioned as ad Pontem Sarisinam (Latin) in 1137 and de Ponte Sarraceno in 1237. The name is from pons (bridge) + a personal name “Saracenus” rather than relation to the Saracens.
Cultural mix: Historically, the region spoke a Romansh dialect (Putér), but over the centuries German and Italian have become more common due to tourism and migration.
Architecture & style: Combination of traditional Engadine houses (notably with sgraffito decorations on facades), and Belle Époque hotels. It has long been a high-altitude health/spa resort.
Nature and Scenery
