Experience the Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg – Nature, History and Idyll

The Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg (Duchy of Lauenburg) is Germany’s only remaining district named after an old duchy. Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Schleswig-Holstein, right between the bustling metropolis of Hamburg and the historic city of Lübeck, the area is a dream destination for travelers looking to escape into a world of quiet forests, glacial lakes and timeless medieval charm.

The destination: Nature and relaxation

Whether you want to book a quiet holiday apartment (Ferienwohnung) tucked away in a picturesque village or a luxurious holiday villa by the lake (Ferienvilla), the region offers the perfect backdrop for relaxation. The landscape is a stunning mix of dense forests and sparkling water, strongly shaped by the last ice age.

Here you will find the Sachsenwald – the largest continuous forest in Schleswig-Holstein – as well as the vast Lauenburger Seen nature park, which is closely linked to the UNESCO biosphere reserve Schaalsee. The area contains more than 40 clear glacial lakes connected by historic waterways such as the Elbe and the old Elbe-Lübeck Canal.

Historic towns with unique charm

The towns in the region are full of history and character. Ratzeburg is known as an impressive “island town”, built between four lakes and dominated by its massive brick cathedral from the 12th century.

Further south lies Mölln, which offers a romantic medieval centre and is famous for the legendary jester Till Eulenspiegel. In Lauenburg on the Elbe you will find a historic old town with colourful half-timbered houses along the waterfront, where old paddle steamers still dock.

A glimpse into the past

The district's history can be traced back to 1260 and originates from the medieval Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg. The region maintained its status as an independent duchy for centuries, changing rulers over time through royal inheritance and treaties.

In the period 1815–1864, the area was ruled in personal union by the Danish king, before later becoming part of Prussia. During the Cold War, the region was divided by the inner German border, with the eastern shores of the lakes marking the border with East Germany. This left a unique natural area along the former “Green Belt”.

Culinary specialties from Lauenburg

The cuisine in the duchy is seasonal, rustic and closely linked to nature and the many lakes.

Lauenburg asparagus (Spargel)

The region is home to the largest and oldest asparagus area in Schleswig-Holstein. From April to Sankthans, farm shops and restaurants are full of freshly harvested asparagus.

Freshwater fish

The clear lakes around Schaalsee and Ratzeburg provide delicious specialties such as smoked maräne, local eel and fresh trout.

Lauenburg plate

A local food tradition where chefs create creative seasonal dishes based on hyper-local ingredients.

Farm cafés and cakes

A visit is not complete without coffee and a large slice of homemade Trinnertorte in a cozy farm café in the countryside.

Outdoor activities and experiences

For active holidaymakers, a holiday home (Ferienhaus) serves as the perfect base for adventures in nature.

Cycling along the Alte Salzstraße

Take an active day trip along the historic Alte Salzstraße trade route, which was once used to transport salt between Lüneburg and Lübeck. The route winds through beautiful landscapes, quiet canals and small villages.

Kayaking, canoeing and SUP on the lakes

The many lakes and canals make the area ideal for water sports. Rent a canoe or kayak and explore the interconnected lake systems, or try Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) on the calm waters of Ratzeburg Domsee.

Hiking in the Sachsenwald

Explore the magical forest paths of the Sachsenwald or discover the Wakenitz nature reserve, often called the “Amazon of the North” due to its dense, almost jungle-like forests.

Local Festivals and Culture

Time your holiday right and you can experience some of the region's most atmospheric festivals and cultural events.

Lauenburg Asparagus Festival

Held in May and June, the festival celebrates the annual asparagus harvest with markets, food stalls and the crowning of the local asparagus queen.

Mölln Eulenspiegel Festival

This annual summer festival features open-air theatre, medieval markets and street performers in honour of the legendary Till Eulenspiegel.

Ratzeburg Rowing Regatta

A prestigious international rowing event where elite athletes gather on Ratzeburger See in early summer.

Autumn markets in the countryside

In September and October, cozy craft and harvest markets are held at historic estates and farm shops with local specialties, apple varieties and game.
