Alpes-de-Haute-Provence: Where the Alps Meet Provence

Between the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and the sun-drenched fields of Provence, the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a master class in contrast.

It’s here that the fresh mountain air meets the scent of wild thyme.

Description and atmosphere

If you’re looking for a holiday, this is the place where the “High Alps” shake hands with the Mediterranean. The landscape is a vibrant patchwork of picturesque hilltop villages, turquoise lakes and jagged limestone cliffs.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon strolling through the lavender fields of Valensole or a breathtaking hike through the Verdon Gorge, the region offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
It’s the kind of scenic destination that feels like a hidden gem, offering a sun-kissed climate that makes every day feel like a dream vacation.

A layered history

The history here is as rugged as the terrain:Roman roots: The region was an important corridor for the Romans: In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte marched through these mountains after escaping from Elba. Today, you can follow the Napoleonic route by car or bike.
Rural resilience: Historically, the area was quite isolated, leading to a strong, independent culture and well-preserved medieval architecture in towns like Sisteron, known as the "Gateway to Provence".

Typical foods (Taste of the South)

The cuisine here is "mountain-meets-market" - hearty but infused with aromatic herbs.
Sisteron lamb: Renowned throughout France for its tenderness, often seasoned with Herbes de Provence.
Lavender honey: A light, delicate honey that captures the essence of the plateaus.
Banon cheese: A creamy goat cheese wrapped in dried chestnut leaves and tied with raffia.
Genépi: A potent herbal liqueur made from alpine flowers - perfect for an after-dinner "digestif".
Truffles: The "black diamonds" of the earth, found in the oak forests of the Verdon area.

Activities & Nature

Nature is the main event here. The department is home to the Verdon Gorge, often called "Europe's Grand Canyon".

Kayaking in the Verdon Gorge or sailing on the clear blue Lac de Sainte-Croix.

Paragliding in Saint-André-les-Alpes, one of the world's leading flying destinations.

Hiking in the Mercantour National Park or cycling in the mountain passes.

StarsThe air is so clear here that the Luberon Observatory offers some of the best stargazing in Europe.

Festivals & Culture

Locals love to celebrate their heritage, usually with lots of food and music:
