Welcome to Carinthia – Austria’s sunny south!

Located on the southern side of the Alps, this region is a master class in combining Mediterranean “Dolce Vita” with rugged Alpine traditions. Whether you’re looking for an adventure in the highlands or a lazy afternoon by a turquoise lake, Carinthia has a place for you.

History: A crossroads of cultures

Carinthia’s history is a rich tapestry woven from Celtic, Roman and Slavic threads. Once the heart of the ancient Celtic kingdom of Noricum, it later became a Roman province. You can still see this legacy today at the archaeological site of Virunum.

The Prince: In the Middle Ages, the dukes of Carinthia were installed in a unique democratic ceremony (the ducal installation) performed in Slovene – a testament to the region’s dual German and Slavic heritage.

The Reformation and beyond: The region experienced violent religious turmoil and later became a stronghold for the Habsburg Empire, evolving into the peaceful, nature-loving province it is today.

Description: Your Mediterranean-Alpine getaway

Imagine waking up in a charming lakeside villa with the sun reflecting off the water, or a modern holiday apartment in the heart of a medieval town. Carinthia is defined by its "Lust am Leben" (joy of life).

The landscape: It is the land of 200 mountains and 1,270 lakes of still water. From the rugged peaks of the Großglockner (Austria's highest mountain) to the warm, drinkable waters of Lake Wörthersee, the contrast is breathtaking.

The Taste of Southern Cuisine

The taste of Carinthian cuisine is an "Alpe-Adriatic" fusion, where hearty mountain food meets light Italian influence:

Kärntner Kasnudeln: The crown jewel. These are large dough pockets filled with quark and mint (or chervil), hand-sealed with a traditional "curly" edge.

Ritschert: A prehistoric stew (literally found in the Hallstatt mines!) made of barley, beans and smoked pork.

Kärntner Reindling: A yeast cake swirled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins - often eaten with tasty ham at Easter!

Fresh fish: Look for "Kärntner Laxn" (sea trout) served on lakeside terraces.

Activities and Nature

Your holiday here can be as fast or leisurely as you like:

Summer: Swim in lakes that reach 28°C, hike the Alpe-Adria-Trail, or cycle the Drau cycle path.

Winter: Ski in Bad Kleinkirchheim (famous for its thermal spas) or Nassfeld.

Natural highlights: Visit the Hohe Tauern National Park to see glaciers and ibex, or explore the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve with its rounded green peaks.

Festivals: A celebration of traditions

Carinthia knows how to throw a party, often centered around proud folk customs:

Villacher Kirchtag: Austria's largest traditional folk festival (August) with parades, Dirndls, lederhosen, and the famous "Kirchtagssuppe".

Villacher Fasching: A world-famous carnival season full of satire and colorful costumes.

Kärntner Sommer: A high-level music and art festival held in Ossiach and Villach.

Wörthersee See-Ess-Spiele: A gourmet festival for food lovers that takes place right on the lake.
