Ischia: The Green Pearl of the Bay of Naples

Ischia is often called the "Green Island" (L'Isola Verde), and for good reason. While its neighbor Capri is known for its glitz and high fashion, Ischia offers a more authentic, lush and soulful Italian escape.

A Layered History

Ischia's history began as Pithecusae, the first Greek colony in the western Mediterranean (around 770 BC). Due to its strategic location in the Bay of Naples, it has been fought over by Romans, Saracens and Aragonese kings. Its most iconic landmark, Castello Aragonese, stands as a testament to these centuries of defense and nobility, connected to the main island by a narrow stone bridge.

The Ultimate Mediterranean Resort

Imagine waking up in one of the island's luxury villas, with the scent of jasmine wafting through the window. Ischia is characterised by its dramatic volcanic topography – steep cliffs, hidden coves and the towering Mount Epomeo. Whether you stay in a secluded villa with a private pool overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea or a boutique hotel in the colourful village of Sant’Angelo, the atmosphere is one of effortless elegance. It’s the perfect holiday destination for those seeking a mix of sun-drenched relaxation and cultural depth. Many holiday homes here have expansive terraces and lush Mediterranean gardens, offering a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

Flavours from land and sea

Ischia’s cuisine is unique because it’s not just about seafood; it’s deeply connected to the volcanic soil.

Coniglio all’Ischitana: The island’s signature dish. Rabbit cooked slowly in a clay pot with tomato, garlic, chilli and local herbs (wild thyme and marjoram).

Pasta e Patate con la Provola: A rich, creamy pasta with potatoes and smoked provola cheese.

Rucolino: A dark, peppery digestive liqueur made from local arugula.

Fresh seafood: Specifically spaghetti alle vongole (clams) or grilled sea bream caught that morning.

Activities: Thermal indulgence and coastal exploration

Ischia is a volcanic powerhouse, offering ample opportunity for both relaxation and adventure: Thermal parks: Visit Poseidon Gardens or Negombo, where you can jump between thermal pools of varying temperatures set in beautiful botanical gardens. Hike Mount Epomeo: A moderate hike to the summit (787) offers 360-degree views of the Bay of Naples and even the Amalfi Coast on clear days.

Boat trips: Hire a gozzo (traditional boat) to discover secret sea caves and the "Green Grotto". Sorgeto Hot Springs: A unique place where hot thermal veins bubble up through the seabed, creating natural "whirlpools" in the sea.

Festivals and traditions

The island lives by its traditions all year round: Festa di Sant'Anna (July 26): The biggest event of the year. A parade of decorated floats on the water takes place in the bay below the castle, ending with a massive simulated "burning" of the castle with fireworks.

San Vito Festival (June): Celebrated in Forio with processions, street food and music.

Settembre sul Sagrato: A series of cultural events and concerts held in September, when the weather is mild and the number of people has decreased.

The botanical paradise

The volcanic soil acts as a super fertilizer. In addition to the vineyards that produce crisp Biancolella wine, you will find stunning gardens: La Mortella Gardens: Created by Susana Walton (wife of composer William Walton), this is one of the most beautiful private botanical gardens in Europe.

Ravino Gardens: Famous for its massive collection of cacti and succulents.
