Lago di Barcis: An Emerald Pearl in the Friulian Dolomites

Located in the heart of the Friulian Dolomites, Lago di Barcis (Lake Barcis) is a stunning emerald pearl. Known for its vibrant waters and the charming village reflected in them, it is a prime destination for those seeking a mix of alpine adventure and quiet relaxation.

History

The lake itself is an artificial reservoir, created in 1954 for hydroelectric purposes. However, the history of the town of Barcis goes back much further. Originally called Cellis, the ancient settlement was destroyed by a landslide in 1314 and rebuilt along the Cellina River. Over the centuries, it has faced numerous trials, including a devastating fire in 1606 and a fire during World War II in 1944. Today, it stands as a robust "reading village" (Borgo della Lettura), renowned for its literary heritage and preserved traditional architecture.

Description & Stay

Imagine waking up in a luxurious holiday villa where the scent of pine fills the air. Barcis offers a unique "Albergo Diffuso" (scattered hotel) experience, where historic stone buildings are transformed into cozy vacation homes. For those seeking an exclusive getaway, you can find exclusive accommodations nearby with a private pool overlooking the jagged Dolomites. Whether you choose a rustic mountain villa or a modern apartment, the emerald green reflections of the lake provide a constant, breathtaking backdrop. Perfect for a refreshing dip after a day of mountain hiking, these properties with private pools offer the ultimate blend of privacy and natural beauty.

Activities, Gastronomy and Culture

Activities and Nature

The lake is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Because the water is remarkably calm, it is a hub for:

Water sports: Kayaking, canoeing, sailing and even motorboat racing ("Barcis Motonautica").

Hiking: The Dint trail offers panoramic views, including the "Skywalk del Dint", a glass-bottomed balcony that hangs over the gorge.

Cellina Gorge: A spectacular nature reserve nearby with one of Italy's largest gorges and an exciting Tibetan bridge.

Cycling: Various trails encircle the lake, ranging from relaxed trails to intense mountain bike climbs.

Typical foods

The local cuisine is "poor" in origin but rich in flavors that take advantage of what the mountains have to offer:

Pitina: A traditional PGI certified meatball made from smoked mutton, goat or venison.

Frico: The quintessential Friulian dish - melted cheese and potatoes fried crispy.

Musetto e Brovada: A spicy pork sausage served with fermented turnips.

Centi wine: Often enjoyed at Palazzo Centi, the town's architectural pride.

Festivals and events

Barcis hosts a number of cultural and sporting events throughout the year:

Barcis Motonautica: A world-class motorboat championship held annually on the emerald green waters of the lake.

Premio Letterario "Giuseppe Malattia della Vallata": A prestigious national poetry and literature award, reflecting the city's status as a "reading village".

St. John's Eve (San Giovanni): Celebrated at the end of June with traditional bonfires and festivities along the lakeside.

Festival dei Fermentati: A modern event celebrating fermented foods and local crafts.
