Mayrhofen – Tyrol’s Alpine Gem in the Zillertal Valley

Located deep in the heart of the Austrian Tyrol, Mayrhofen is the crown jewel of the Zillertal Valley. It seamlessly blends the charm of a traditional Alpine village with the infrastructure of a world-class resort. Whether you’re looking for an exciting outdoor adventure or a relaxing escape to pristine mountain scenery, Mayrhofen caters perfectly to every traveler. Here’s a rundown of what makes this Tyrolean gem an unforgettable destination.

History

Mayrhofen’s name first appeared in written records around the year 1200, and originated as a modest, rural farming village. For centuries, it remained deeply connected to agriculture and the local Salzburg region, and officially became part of Tyrol in 1816. The town’s transformation into a renowned resort began in the late 19th century with the construction of the iconic Berliner Hütte mountain hut, which put the area on the map for mountaineers. The opening of the historic Zillertal Railway in 1902 and the launch of its pioneering cable cars in the 1950s and 60s officially cemented Mayrhofen as a year-round tourist destination, and it has even hosted famous figures such as the author Erich Kästner.

Mayrhofen boasts an enchanting atmosphere where rustic, intricate wood-carved architecture meets lively Alpine energy. The vibrant town centre is filled with cosy cafés, shops and traditional restaurants. As a leading global destination, the town offers a fantastic range of accommodation to suit every travel style. Nature

The nature surrounding Mayrhofen is nothing short of breathtaking. The town lies at the foot of dramatic peaks such as the Penken and Ahorn, surrounded by the Zillertal Alps Nature Park – a protected area spanning 422 square kilometres. The landscape is a rich tapestry of towering 3,000-metre peaks, majestic glaciers including the nearby Hintertux, lush alpine meadows, ancient pine forests and rushing glacial streams.

Activities

Mayrhofen is an outdoor playground whatever the season.

In winter, the resort transforms into a snowy paradise as part of the Ski Zillertal 3000 network with 193 kilometers of pristine slopes. Here you will find the legendary Harakiri, Austria's steepest groomed ski slope with a gradient of 78 percent. In addition, the area offers the world-famous Penken Park for snowboarders and freestyle skiers.

In summer, the mountains open up to more than 1,400 kilometers of signposted hiking trails. Mountain biking, e-biking and paragliding are extremely popular, while the Schlegeis Alpestraße offers spectacular views of the reservoir, via ferratas and a huge 150-meter swing.

Typical foods

Tyrolean cuisine is hearty, comforting and designed to energize after a long day in the mountains. Among the most popular local specialties are Zillertaler Krapfen, a crispy fried dough pocket filled with Tyrolean grey cheese and potatoes. Speckknödel are hearty bacon dumplings served in a rich beef broth or with sauerkraut. Kasspatzln is the Alpine version of mac and cheese with soft egg noodles, melted cheese and crispy onions. Brettljause is a classic snack board with local hams, Alpine cheese, pickles and cold cuts, often served with a local schnapps.
