Fendels: An Authentic Mountain Village in Tyrol

Perched high above the Inn Valley on a sunny plateau at an altitude of 1,352 meters, Fendels is one of Tyrol’s smallest and most authentic mountain villages. It is a hidden gem in the Landeck district of Austria, offering a “gentle” approach to tourism with a focus on family, nature and Alpine tradition.

History

Fendels has roots that stretch back to the 13th century, with its first official mention in documents from 1297. For centuries it remained an isolated mountain farming community. Remarkably, until 1959 the village was only accessible via a steep cable car or trails. The construction of a modern road finally connected it to the valley floor, but the village has successfully retained its rustic charm and traditional architecture, avoiding the overdevelopment seen in larger Alpine resorts.

Description and Accommodation

Fendels is the epitome of a picturesque Tyrolean village. Because it is situated on a plateau, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Kaunertal mountains.

When planning a stay, the village offers a cozy selection of accommodation options. You can find traditional Tyrolean villas that cater to larger groups, or charming holiday apartments (often found in family-run Landhaus properties) with sun-drenched terraces and modern kitchenettes. Many holiday homes are located right next to the slopes, allowing for "ski-in/ski-out" convenience. Whether you are looking for a rustic mountain hut experience or a spacious holiday home overlooking the Inn Valley, the village offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.

Typical dishes

The cuisine here is hearty and designed to fuel mountain adventures. Expect classic Tyrolean comfort food, including:

Tyrolean Speckknödel: Savory bacon dumplings served in a clear broth or with sauerkraut.

Käsespätzle: Soft egg noodles drizzled with melted mountain cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.

Schlutzkrapfen: Tyrolean ravioli, typically filled with spinach and quark or potato.

Marend: A traditional snack board with local smoked ham (Speck), Alpine cheese, horseradish and dark farmhouse bread.

Moosbeernocken: A sweet treat made from pan-fried mountain blueberries in a pancake-like batter.

Activities

Fendels is a playground with two seasons:

Winter: The Winterberg Fendels ski area is famous for being family-friendly. It offers 11 km of slopes, night skiing and a 4.5 km natural toboggan run. It is also a popular place for skiing and snowshoeing.

Summer: The "Summer Mountain" comes alive with the Bach am Moos nature playground, mountain carting (gravity-driven go-karts) and an extensive network of hiking trails. The Windbachtrail is a highlight for mountain bikers.

Festivals

Life in Fendels is dictated by the seasons and local customs:

Cattle drive (Almabtrieb): In autumn, the cows are decorated with flowers and bells as they are brought down from the high alpine pastures - a big local celebration with music and food.

Spring concerts: The local Fendels Marching Band often holds concerts in May to celebrate the end of winter.

Kirchtag: Village festivals celebrating the patron saint of the local church, with traditional Tyrolean costume (Tracht), brass music and communal feasts.

Nature

The nature here is "intact" and raw. Fendels is located at the entrance to the Kaunertal valley and is part of the Kaunergrat Nature Park.

Flora and fauna: In spring, you'll find lush alpine meadows filled with wildflowers and dense larch forests that turn golden in autumn.

Waterfalls and lakes: Nearby, the Ried bathing lake offers a place to cool off, while the hike to the Anton Renk huts rewards you with views of massive waterfalls cascading down the cliff faces.

Proximity to glaciers: The Kaunertal glacier is just a short drive away and offers year-round ice and snow, stretching over 3,000 metres above sea level.
