Located in the heart of the Pinzgau region, Lofer is a picturesque market town in Salzburg's Saalachtal valley. It strikes a rare balance between rugged Alpine drama and a gentle, family-friendly atmosphere, making it a prime destination for those seeking an authentic Austrian getaway.

History and Description

Lofer's roots stretch back to its status as an important trading post between Salzburg and Tyrol. Historically, it served as an important stop for salt transport and travelers crossing the mountain passes. Today, the village center is a postcard, brought to life with frescoes, narrow cobblestone streets, and the sound of the Saalach River gurgling nearby.

Whether you're looking for a rustic Alpine villa tucked away on a quiet hillside or a stylish vacation apartment right in the village center, Lofer offers a "home away from home" feel. Many luxury chalets and self-catering apartments here feature traditional timber-framed architecture mixed with modern wellness facilities such as private saunas - ideal for a relaxing holiday rental after a day on the slopes.

Nature and Landscapes

Lofer is famously framed by the Loferer Steinberge - massive, jagged limestone peaks that glow orange at sunset.

Winter

The Almenwelt Lofer ski resort is a family favorite and offers 46 km of slopes. In addition to skiing, you can enjoy natural toboggan runs and cross-country ski trails.

Summer

Over 400 km of hiking and cycling trails. The waterfall trail is a must for families with 12 interactive stations leading up to the alpine meadows. For the brave, Saalach offers some of the most challenging kayaking routes in Europe.

Typical dishes

The cuisine here is "Alm-food" - hearty, honest and mountain-tested.

Kasnockn: Small dumplings covered in melted mountain cheese and topped with fried onions.

Kaspressknödel: Flat cheese dumplings, fried crispy in a pan and served in a clear beef broth.

Moosbeermuas: A rustic blueberry pancake/omelette hybrid traditionally cooked in a frying pan.

Salzburger Nockerl: A fluffy, sweet soufflé representing the three snow-capped mountains of Salzburg.

Festivals and traditions

Lofer's social calendar is deeply rooted in the seasons:

Bauernherbst (Harvest Festival): From late August to October, the valley celebrates the harvest with local markets, traditional dress (dirndls and lederhosen) and folk music.

Almabtrieb: The spectacular autumn event where cattle are decorated with flowers and bells as they are driven down from the high pastures into the valley.

Village Evenings: In summer, the village square hosts weekly concerts with local brass bands and traditional "Schuhplattler" dancers.
