Flachau: An Alpine Gem in the Heart of Salzburgerland

Located in the heart of Salzburgerland, Flachau is a premium Austrian destination that perfectly balances high-octane sports with traditional Alpine charm. Whether you’re looking for a luxury villa for a group holiday or a cozy apartment for a family vacation, Flachau offers a scenic backdrop for an unforgettable holiday.

History

Flachau’s roots go deeper than its ski slopes. Until the 19th century, it was an important hub for iron smelting in the Pongau district. While the industrial blast furnaces are long gone, the town successfully converted to tourism in the 20th century. Today, it is world-famous as the home of skiing legend Hermann Maier and a fixture on the FIS Ski World Cup calendar.

Description and Accommodation

Flachau is a vibrant, linear village stretching along a sunny valley. It is part of the "Snow Space Salzburg" and the massive "Ski Amadé" network. The town is designed for convenience; many villas and holiday homes are just steps away from the high-tech lift systems.

Villas: For those seeking exclusivity, there are spacious villas with private saunas and views of the mountains on the outskirts.

Apartments: Centrally located holiday apartments offer a "home away from home" feeling, often with traditional wooden architecture and modern amenities.

Holiday atmosphere: The atmosphere is a mix of athletic energy and relaxed "Gemütlichkeit" (coziness).

Typical foods

The cuisine of Salzburgerland is hearty and designed to energize hikers and skiers.

Kasnockn: Small dumplings (spätzle) filled with sharp mountain cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.

Kaspressknödel: Flat, pressed cheese dumplings, pan-fried until golden and served in a clear broth or with sauerkraut.
Salzburger Nockerl: A sweet, airy soufflé representing the three snow-capped mountains that surround Salzburg.
Brettljause: A rustic wooden dish filled with local smoked ham, mountain cheese, pickled cucumbers and horseradish.

Activities

Winter: Boasts over 120 km of slopes. In addition to skiing, you can enjoy tobogganing (including floodlit night runs), fat biking and snowshoeing.

Summer: The lifts are open to hikers and mountain bikers. The Lucky Flacher (an alpine slide) is a hit all year round, and the nearby Therme Amadé offers relaxation in saltwater pools.

Water sports: For the brave, the nearby Flachauwinkl and Reitdorf lakes offer crystal-clear swimming.

Festivals

Bauernherbst (Farmer's Autumn): A celebration of the harvest and the return of the cattle from the high pastures. Expect traditional costumes (lederhosen and dirndls), folk music and craft markets.

Ski World Cup: Every January the "Ladies' Night Slalom" transforms the village into a giant party.

Musistadl Events: Regular folk music evenings and concerts with local brass bands and international DJs.

Nature

Flachau is defined by the Grießenkareck mountain and the Enns River. The landscape ranges from lush, green valley floors to rugged limestone peaks.

Flori’s Adventure Path: A nature trail perfect for families staying in local apartments.

Tappenkarsee: A bit of a hike away but widely considered one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Alps, surrounded by steep rock walls.
