Welcome to Innerfragant, a hidden gem tucked away in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Carinthia, Austria. This high-altitude village is the gateway to the famous Mölltaler Glacier and offers the perfect blend of rustic Alpine charm and world-class adventure.

Description and atmosphere

Innerfragant is the epitome of a peaceful mountain paradise. Situated at the end of the Fragant Valley, it serves as the base for the Mölltaler Glacier cable car. The landscape is dominated by jagged peaks, cascading waterfalls and lush green pastures.

When planning your stay, you’ll find a selection of cozy holiday apartments and traditional Austrian villas that cater to both families and solo adventurers. Many holiday homes here have sun-drenched balconies with panoramic views of the glacier, while rustic self-catering chalets offer a “home away from home” feel with modern amenities like saunas and wood-burning stoves.

A brief history

The history of Innerfragant is deeply rooted in alpine agriculture and, more importantly, the mining industry. For centuries, copper was mined in the surrounding mountains. It was only at the end of the 20th century that the region transformed into a tourism powerhouse with the development of the Mölltaler Gletscherbahn, which opened up year-round skiing and made the "Adventure 3000" possible.

Typical foods and Carinthian specialties

Dining in Innerfragant is an authentic "Alpe-Adria" experience, combining hearty mountain food with Mediterranean influences.

Regional classics

Kärntner Kasnudeln: The crown jewel of the region - large pasta pockets filled with a mixture of quark, potatoes, mint and chervil, traditionally "curled" (kränkeln) at the edges.

Reindling: A yeast cake filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins, often served for breakfast or during festivals.

Brettljause: A rustic snack board with local smoked ham (Speck), Alpine cheese, horseradish and farmhouse bread.

Kirchtagssuppe: A creamy, saffron-infused yellow soup served during local church festivals.

Activities and nature

Whether you are a "powder hound" or a summer hiker, the nature here is breathtaking.

Adventures in the heights and valleys

Mölltaler Glacier: Austria's only glacier ski resort in Carinthia, offering skiing almost all year round at altitudes up to 3,122 meters.

Raggaschlucht Gorge: One of the most beautiful natural monuments in the Alps with a narrow path through towering rock walls and thundering waterfalls.

Hiking and cycling: Explore the "Goldberggruppen" mountains, or take a leisurely stroll to the many mountain huts (Almen) for a glass of fresh buttermilk.

Water sports: The nearby Möll River is a hotspot for white water rafting and canyoning.

Festivals and traditions

Innerfragant and the surrounding area are rich in vibrant culture, which is celebrated throughout the year.

Local celebrations

Kirchtag: Every village has its "church day", a festival with traditional costumes (lederhosen and dirndls), brass band music and plenty of local beer.

Almabtrieb: In autumn, watch the colorful procession of cattle driven down from the high pastures to the valley, adorned with ornate flower headdresses.

Advent Markets: In winter, the nearby towns of Flattach and Obervellach host charming Christmas markets with handmade crafts and mulled wine.
