Located in the heart of the Bavarian Forest, Sankt Englmar is a typical mountain village that changes with the seasons. At an altitude of around 800 to 900 meters, it serves as a first-class health resort and a playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

Description & Your stay

Sankt Englmar is the perfect destination for a cozy holiday. The village is characterized by its rolling alpine meadows and dense spruce forests. If you are planning a trip, you will find a wide selection of holiday homes, ranging from rustic villas with traditional wood-carved balconies to modern apartments equipped with wellness facilities such as saunas and indoor pools.

Whether you choose a spacious holiday home for the whole family or a quiet studio apartment overlooking the Danube Valley, the hospitality here is warm and authentically Bavarian. Many accommodations are located directly on hiking trails or near the ski lifts, making it an easy "base camp" for your adventures.

History

The village is named after Saint Englmar, a hermit who lived in the area in the 11th century. According to local legend, he was a man of great piety who was eventually murdered; his body was later found miraculously preserved under the snow. Today, his legacy is central to the town's identity, especially through the Englmarisuchen (The Search for Saint Englmar), a religious and folk play performed every Pentecost and dating back centuries.

Nature and Activities

Saint Englmar is famous for its "four-thousanders" - four peaks exceeding 1,000 meters: Pröller, Predigtstuhl, Knogl and Hirschenstein.

Summer

Explore over 125 km of marked hiking trails. A must-see is the Waldwipfelweg (treetop path), where you can walk 30 meters above the forest floor for panoramic views. The Sommerrodelbahn (summer toboggan run) offers high-speed fun for families.

Winter

It is a winter sports hub with several ski lifts for downhill skiing and over 50 km of cross-country skiing trails. The region is also popular for snowshoeing and romantic winter hikes through cleared forest paths.

Typical foods

Bavarian comfort food is the order of the day here. Expect hearty portions designed to revitalise hikers and skiers:

Schweinebraten: Roast pork served with dark beer sauce and Knödel (potato dumplings).

Käsespätzle: Soft egg noodles drizzled with melted Alpine cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.

Obatzda: A creamy, spicy cheese spread (camembert-based) served with a giant Brezn (pretzel).

Kaiserschmarrn: A grated, caramelized pancake sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with applesauce.

Festivals

Englmarisuchen (Whitsun): The town's most important historical festival, with a colorful parade and a theatrical reenactment of the discovery of Sankt Englmar.

Rauhnacht: During the "harsh nights" in late December/early January, locals dress in spooky masks to drive away the winter spirit with loud bells and whips.

Gäubodenvolksfest: This massive folk festival in August, held in nearby Straubing, is a highlight for anyone living in Sankt Englmar, and features traditional beer tents and carnival rides.
