Located in the rugged, romantic corner of Lower Bavaria, where Germany meets the Czech Republic and Austria, Freyung-Grafenau is a haven for those who prefer the rustle of pine needles to the buzz of a city. It is the heart of the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) - the first and oldest national park in Germany.

History in a nutshell

The district was officially formed in 1972, but its roots are medieval. It was historically divided by the Ilz River:

Wolfstein (East): Once the property of the powerful Bishops of Passau.

Grafenau (West): A strategic trading center that officially became part of Bavaria in 1438.

The region's heritage is linked to the "Goldener Steig", an ancient salt trade route that brought wealth and influence to these forest towns centuries ago.

Nature and landscape

This is a land of superlatives for nature lovers. It is dominated by the Bavarian Forest National Park, where the philosophy is "let nature be nature".

Geselchtes: Smoked pork, often served with sauerkraut.

Beer: Visit the local Lang Bräu in Freyung for an authentic regional beer.
