Schliersee: An Alpine Gem in the Heart of Bavaria

Schliersee is a picturesque lakeside town nestled in the Bavarian Alps in Upper Bavaria, Germany. Known as a "climatic health resort", it offers a perfect blend of traditional Alpine culture, crystal-clear water and rugged mountain peaks.

History

Schliersee's roots date back to 779 AD, when five monks from Ireland and Scotland founded a small monastery called "Slyrse". Over the centuries, the area developed from a monastic settlement to a rural farming community under the influence of the Hohenwaldeck Counts and later the Bishopric of Freising. In the late 19th century, Munich-based artists "discovered" the romantic beauty of the lake and transformed it into a fashionable holiday destination. The arrival of the railway in 1869 sparked a tourism boom that led to the establishment of the famous Schliersee Farmers' Theatre - the oldest of its kind in Bavaria.

Description and accommodation

The town is characterised by its flower-filled balconies, baroque church spires and stunning lakeside setting. It is a prime destination for those seeking a high-quality holiday. The area is filled with charming villas and elegant lakeside apartments, offering breathtaking views of the water and the surrounding Mangfallgebirge mountains.

Whether you are looking for a rustic holiday home on a renovated farm or a modern luxury apartment with a private sauna and balcony, Schliersee offers a "home away from home" atmosphere. Many villas feature traditional Bavarian architecture, while newer holiday homes offer amenities such as private jetties, exclusive kitchens and direct access to hiking trails.

Typical foods

Bavarian Brotzeit: A tasty snack platter consisting of local cheeses (like Obatzda), cold cuts, radishes, and freshly baked pretzels.

Fresh lake fish: Arctic char (Saibling) and trout (Forelle) caught directly from Lake Schliersee or the nearby Spitzingsee.

Schlierseer Whiskey: The town is home to the Slyrs Distillery, which produces world-class Bavarian single malt whiskey.

Alpine pastries: Enjoy a Schmalznudel (fried dough) or a piece of apple strudel in a mountain hut like the Schliersbergalm.

Activities

Water sports: In summer, the lake is a hub for swimming, stand-up paddling (SUP), and rowing. The Schliersee Lido (beach bath) is a popular spot for families.

Hiking and cycling routes: The routes range from the easy 7 km loop around the lake to the challenging climb of the Brecherspitz or Wendelstein.

Winter sports: Schliersee was a pioneer of Bavarian skiing. Today, the nearby Spitzingsee-Tegernsee ski area offers excellent downhill and cross-country ski runs.

Summer tobogganing: Take the cable car up to the Schliersbergalm and ride the summer toboggan run back down to the valley.

Festivals

Schliersee Lake Festival (See-Fest): Held at the end of July with traditional "Fischerstechen" (water jousting), Schuhplattler dancing and a massive fireworks display over the water.

Forest Festival (Waldfest): A typical Bavarian event in August with brass bands, local beer and everyone dressed in lederhosen and dirndls.

Leonhardifahrt: A traditional horse-drawn carriage procession in nearby towns every November in honor of Saint Leonhard, the patron saint of livestock.

Nature

The environment is defined by its deep blue waters and lush alpine meadows. To the south lies Lake Spitzingsee, which sits at 1,100 meters above sea level and offers a cooler, high-altitude alpine experience. Nature lovers can explore the Josefstaler waterfalls or hike through the romantic Kloo-Ascher valley. The region is a protected nature reserve where you can still see chamois on the rocky ridges and enjoy the blooming gentians in spring.
