Welcome to Wemding: The Picturesque Fuchsia Town

Wemding is a picturesque "fuchsia town" located in the Donau-Ries district of Bavaria, Germany. It is uniquely situated on the edge of the Ries meteorite crater, a geological wonder that shapes both its landscape and history.

History and Description

Founded in 793, Wemding is a typical medieval town in Bavaria. It is famous as the birthplace of Leonhart Fuchs, the 16th-century botanist after whom the fuchsia plant is named. As you walk through the town, you will see the historic Marktplatz (market square) surrounded by colorful half-timbered houses and the impressive St. Emmeram Basilica with its twin towers.

A quirky piece of modern history is the Zeitpyramiden (Time Pyramid), an art project that began in 1993. A new concrete block is added only every 10 years; the project is not expected to be completed until the year 3183!

For travelers, Wemding offers a variety of vacation rentals, from cozy apartments in the historic center to modern villas and holiday homes near the lake. Whether you're looking for a rustic Ferienwohnung (holiday apartment) or a luxurious chalet with a view of the Ries crater, the town offers a peaceful base from which to explore the Romantic Road.

Typical foods

Expect hearty, soul-warming Bavarian and Franconian cuisine:

Schweinshaxe: Roasted pork knuckle with a crackling skin, usually served with potato dumplings (Knödel).

Weißwurst: Traditional white veal sausage, eaten exclusively before dinner with sweet mustard and a soft pretzel.

Käsespätzle: Soft egg noodles doused with melted cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.

Fuchsia-themed treats: During festival season, you can find local cakes or drinks inspired by the town's floral heritage.

Activities and Festivals

Fuchsiamarkt (Fuchsia Market): Held annually in May, it is Germany's only market dedicated to fuchsias, transforming the city into a sea of ??red, pink and purple.

City Wall Walk: You can walk along parts of the medieval Stadtmauer (city wall) for panoramic views of the red-tiled roofs.

Wallfahrt Maria Brünnlein: Visit one of Bavaria's most famous pilgrimage churches, known for its beautiful Rococo interior and "healing" spring water.

Christmas Market: In December, the Marktplatz is transformed into a festive wonderland with wooden stalls and mulled wine.

Nature and outdoor activities

Wemding is the gateway to two large nature parks: the Ries Geopark and the Altmühltal Nature Park.

Wemdinger Ried: A quiet nature reserve perfect for birdwatching and relaxing walks through rare bogs.

Waldsee: A nearby forest lake that is a hotspot for summer swimming, paddle boating and sunbathing.

Hiking and cycling: The area is crisscrossed by trails, including the Sculpture Trail and trails that take you directly to the edge of the ancient meteorite crater.
