Gulpen: The Heart of South Limburg

Located in the heart of the South Limburg (Zuid-Limburg) mountain landscape, Gulpen is a charming Dutch village that acts as the "beating heart" of the region. Known for its rolling hills, traditional breweries and Burgundian lifestyle, it is a prime destination for those seeking an authentic holiday in the Netherlands.

History and description

Gulpen takes its name from the river Gulp, which winds through the village centre. Its history dates back to Roman times, where it lies on a historic route between Maastricht and Aachen. Today it is the administrative centre of the Gulpen-Wittem municipality.

The village is famous for its "Heuvelland" (hilly landscape), which is unique in the otherwise flat Netherlands. As you walk through the town, you will see the old church tower (11th-13th century), the remains of a medieval fortified church and the neo-Romanesque Sint Petruskerk. Just outside the city center lies the majestic Neubourg Castle, a 14th-century gem surrounded by lush greenery.

Typical foods: A Burgundian feast

Limburg is known for its "Burgundian" lifestyle - with a focus on quality, taste and hospitality.

Gulpener beer: The local Gulpener Bierbrouwerij is one of the most sustainable breweries in Europe. Try a Gerardus or a local Pilsner.

Limburgse Vlaai: A world-famous fruit-filled pie with a thin crust. Sour cherries (Kersen) and apricots (Abrikozen) are local favorites.

Zuurvlees (Zoervlees): A sweet and sour beef stew (traditionally horse meat) marinated in vinegar and sweetened with gingerbread and apple syrup.

White asparagus: Known as "White Gold", these are a seasonal delicacy served in spring with ham and eggs.

Activities and Nature

Gulpen is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

Gulpenerberg: Hike or cycle up this hill for panoramic views of the valley. It is a legendary climb for cyclists.

Hiking trails: Krijtlandpad is a famous long-distance route that runs through Gulpen and showcases the region’s unique limestone soil and flora.

Mosaqua: A massive subtropical bathing paradise, perfect for families on a zomervakantie (summer holiday).

Brewery visit: Take a tour of the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij to learn about local hops and sustainable brewing.

Shops and festivals

Weekly market: Held every Thursday morning on the market square, it was once voted the best small market in the Netherlands.

Specialty shops: The village offers cozy shops, shops with outdoor equipment for hikers and local delicatessens selling Mestreechter stroeap (apple/pear syrup).

Nacht van Gulpen: A legendary 70 km long night walk held every June and attracting thousands of participants.

Gulpener Beer Festival: This festival, usually held in August, celebrates the local hop harvest with music, food and, of course, beer.
