Bar: Montenegro's Sunny Coastal Gem

Tucked between the rugged Rumija Mountain and the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Bar is Montenegro's sunniest coastal getaway. Known as the "City of Olives," it offers a unique blend of a bustling modern port and a mysterious, ruined old town.

History and Description

Bar's history is a "tale of two cities." Stari Bar (Old Bar), 4km inland, dates back over 2,500 years and was shaped by Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans until a gunpowder explosion and earthquake in 1979 left it in beautiful, atmospheric ruins. Down by the coast, Novi Bar (New Bar) is a modern, spacious town with wide, palm-lined boulevards and the country's primary port.

Holiday vibe

Whether you're looking for a sun-soaked holiday or an off-the-beaten-path getaway, Bar feels more authentic and less "touristy" than Budva. It's a place where you can soak up the Mediterranean rays on the promenade before heading to the hills to immerse yourself in history.

Typical foods

The local cuisine is a delicious cross between Mediterranean fish and hearty Balkan mountain food.

Olives & Oil: Bar is home to over 100,000 olive trees. Try the local yellow-green olive oil, often served with crusty bread.

Bleak (Ukljeva): A small fish from nearby Lake Skadar, usually dried or smoked.

Cevapi & Burek: Classic grilled minced meat sausages from the Balkans and crispy, savory pastries (cheese or meat).

Jardum: A traditional, thick sheep's milk drink specific to this region.

Pomegranate juice: Freshly squeezed from the wild pomegranates that grow all over the mountainside.

Activities & Nature

Stari Bar Fortress: Stroll through the stone arches, the 17th-century Ottoman aqueduct, and the bell tower.

Stara Maslina: Visit one of the world's oldest olive trees, estimated to be over 2,200 years old.

Canyoning: For adrenaline seekers, the Rikavac and Medurecje canyons offer world-class trekking and rappelling.

Beaches: Head to Red Beach (named for its reddish pebbles) or the pine-fringed Žukotrlica in Šušanj for a refreshing dip.

Mount Rumija: Hike to the top for a breathtaking panoramic view, where you can see both the Adriatic Sea and Lake Skadar at once.

Shops and Festivals

Shopping

In the town center, you’ll find Robna Kuca (department store) and various shops. For a more traditional experience, visit the old Bar market on Fridays to buy local honey, olive wood carvings, and lace.

Festivals

Bar Chronicle (Barski Ljetopis): A massive summer arts festival (July-August) featuring theater, music, and literature.

Maslinijada: This “olive festival,” held in November, celebrates the harvest with folk music and endless tastings of olives, cheese, and wine.

Wine and Gloom Festival: A December favorite, held in nearby Virpazar.
