Pomer is a hidden gem in southern Istria, Croatia. Once a humble fishing village, it has transformed into a sophisticated yet peaceful retreat, particularly famous for its high-end glamping and its deep, protected bay that serves as a sanctuary for sailors.

History: From Roman Baths to Modern Marina
Pomer’s history is anchored in its geography. The Romans called it Pomoerium and utilized the sheltered bay for luxury.

Roman Roots: Archaeological remains show that the powerful Roman Aranum family built luxury villas, thermal baths, and an aqueduct here.

Religious Heritage: In the 6th century, a Byzantine basilica was built over a Roman villa. You can still see the Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary (14th century), which houses a 15th-century bronze crucifix and a 16th-century statue of Our Lady.

The "Fontanelle": In the 12th century, it was known as Fontanelle di S. Giovanni due to the freshwater springs found along the shore, which are still present today.

Nature & Description
Pomer is defined by its connection to the Medulin Bay. It is quieter than neighboring Medulin or Pula, making it ideal for those who prefer nature over nightlife.

The Bay: The water is shallow and exceptionally calm, creating a unique marine ecosystem with seagrass meadows and rare species like the Mediterranean killifish.

The Footbridge: A scenic 300-meter wooden promenade connects Pomer to Premantura across the water—perfect for sunset walks and birdwatching.

The Forest: The town is fringed by dense pine forests that provide natural shade even in the height of summer.

Typical Food: Seafood & Shellfish
Because of its calm waters, Pomer is a historic center for shellfish farming.

Mussels & Oysters: You must try dagnje na buzaru (mussels in a garlic, wine, and parsley sauce).

Istrian Staples: Local restaurants (konobas) serve handmade pasta like fuži or pljukanci, often paired with Istrian truffles or wild asparagus.

Olive Oil: The region produces some of the world’s best extra-virgin olive oil; it’s typically served as a starter with fresh bread.

Activities & Things to Do
Pomer is a hub for "active relaxation."

Water Sports: The bay’s wind conditions make it a prime spot for windsurfing and kayaking.

Glamping: It is home to Arena One 99, one of Croatia’s premier glamping sites, offering outdoor yoga and wellness.

Boating: The ACI Marina Pomer is a state-of-the-art facility for those looking to explore the Medulin archipelago.

Adrenaline: Nearby, you'll find the Jangalooz Adventure Park (ropes courses and climbing).

Shops & Festivals
While Pomer is small, it provides the essentials and a few unique highlights.

Shops: There is a well-stocked grocery store near the marina and small local stands selling seasonal fruit, honey, and olive oil. For major shopping malls, Pula is only a 10-minute drive away.

Pomer Night (August 14th): The town’s biggest annual festival, featuring folk music, local food stalls, and entertainment.

Classical Music: During the summer, the Church of the Visitation of Mary hosts intimate classical music concerts.
