Formentera, the smallest of Spain's Balearic Islands, is often called the "Last Paradise" of the Mediterranean. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and laid-back bohemian vibe, it offers a stark, tranquil contrast to its lively neighbor, Ibiza.

1. History
Etymology: The name is believed to derive from the Latin Frumentarium, meaning "granary," as the Romans used the island for intensive wheat cultivation.

Ancient Inhabitants: Presence dates back to the Megalithic era (2000–1600 BC), evidenced by the Ca na Costa burial site. It was later occupied by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors.

The Pirate Gap: From the 14th to the 18th century, constant attacks by Barbary pirates made the island virtually uninhabitable. It was eventually repopulated in the late 1600s by people from Ibiza.

Hippie Era: In the 1960s and 70s, it became a sanctuary for the hippie movement, attracting artists and musicians like Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan, whose influence still lingers in the island's artsy, free-spirited culture.

2. Description & Atmosphere
Formentera is flat and small (about 12 miles long), making it perfect for exploring by bicycle or scooter. It lacks an airport (accessible only by ferry from Ibiza), which has helped preserve its natural beauty. The island is famous for its pristine white sand and nude-friendly beaches.

Main Villages: Sant Francesc Xavier (the capital), Sant Ferran de ses Roques (artistic hub), and Es Pujols (main tourist center).

3. Nature
Posidonia Oceanica: This UNESCO World Heritage-listed seagrass is the secret to Formentera’s clear water. It acts as a natural filter and oxygenates the sea.

Ses Salines Natural Park: Stretches between Ibiza and Formentera, encompassing salt flats that turn pinkish in the sun and serve as a habitat for flamingos and migratory birds.

Lakes: Estany Pudent and Estany des Peix are large lagoons perfect for birdwatching and photography.

4. Typical Foods
Formentera’s cuisine is a "slow food" tradition based on local resources:

Ensalada Payesa: A rustic salad featuring Peix Sec (sun-dried fish), tomatoes, peppers, and crusty bread.

Frit de Bestiar: Fried lamb with potatoes and peppers.

Bullit de Peix: A traditional fish stew usually served with arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish stock).

Flaó: A cheesecake flavored with mint and aniseed.

Herbes Eivissenques: A local herbal liqueur made from up to 18 different wild island plants.

5. Activities
Beaches: Ses Illetes is frequently ranked among the best beaches in the world. Cala Saona is famous for its red cliffs and sunsets.

Lighthouses: Visit Cap de Barbaria (famous for its dramatic sunset views and "hole in the ground" cave) and La Mola, which inspired Jules Verne.

Active Tourism: The island has over 30 "Green Routes" (Rutes Verdes) for hiking and cycling.

Diving & Snorkeling: The underwater visibility is exceptional due to the Posidonia meadows.

6. Festivals & Markets
La Mola Craft Market: Held on Wednesdays and Sundays, featuring local artisans and live music in a hippie-chic atmosphere.

Sant Jaume (July 25): The island's main festival in Sant Francesc, featuring traditional Ball Pagès (peasant dancing) and concerts.

Flower Power Parties: Held during the summer (usually in Sant Francesc or Es Pujols), these are legendary retro parties celebrating the island's hippie heritage.

Formentera Jazz Festival: An early June event attracting international and local musicians.
