Loir-et-Cher is essentially the heart of the "Garden of France." Located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, it’s a place where royal history meets wild, marshy nature. It’s elegant but unpretentious, home to some of the world's most famous architecture and quiet, hidden river valleys.

A Quick Dip into History
The history of Loir-et-Cher is the history of the French Monarchy.

The Royal Playground: During the Renaissance, the French kings moved their court from Paris to the Loire Valley. This transformed the region into a concentrated hub of power and art.

The Three Blois: The capital, Blois, served as a residence for seven kings of France. Its château is a "textbook" of French architecture, featuring Gothic, Flamboyant, Renaissance, and Classical styles all in one courtyard.

Description & Vibe
The department is split into three distinct "moods":

The Loire Valley: The majestic middle, dominated by the wide, sandy Loire River and massive châteaux.

The Sologne: To the south, a mysterious land of forests, heaths, and thousands of ponds. It’s wilder and popular for hunting and hiking.

The Perche & Vendômois: To the north, characterized by rolling hills and "troglodyte" (cave) dwellings carved into the limestone cliffs.

Typical Foods: The "Terroir"
The food here is rustic yet refined, often featuring game from the Sologne forests and fresh fish from the Loire.

Selles-sur-Cher: A world-famous goat cheese dusted with wood ash.

Tarte Tatin: Legend has it this "upside-down" apple tart was invented by mistake by the Tatin sisters in Lamotte-Beuvron.

Game & Mushrooms: Wild boar, venison, and chanterelles are staples of the Sologne.

Pithiviers: A puff pastry pie filled with almond cream (frangipane).

Wines: Don't miss the Touraine-Mesland or Cheverny whites and reds.

Activities & Nature
Whether you want to feel like a knight or an explorer, there's plenty to do:

Château Hopping: * Chambord: The big one. 440 rooms and a famous double-helix staircase designed (likely) by Leonardo da Vinci.

Cheverny: The inspiration for "Marlinspike Hall" in the Tintin comics.

ZooParc de Beauval: Consistently ranked as one of the best zoos in the world, famous for its giant pandas and massive tropical domes.

Loire à Vélo: A world-class cycling route that allows you to pedal along the river banks with very little incline.

Boating: Taking a traditional flat-bottomed boat (toue) out on the Loire at sunset is a must.

Festivals & Events
The International Garden Festival (Chaumont-sur-Loire): From spring to autumn, contemporary designers create stunning, conceptual gardens.

Rendez-vous de l'histoire (Blois): A massive gathering for history buffs, featuring debates, films, and book fairs every October.

Game Fair (Lamotte-Beuvron): The largest hunting and nature exhibition in France.
