Ražanac is a quiet, authentic coastal village in North Dalmatia, situated about 22 km northeast of Zadar. Unlike the bustling tourist hubs nearby, it retains a traditional Mediterranean atmosphere, characterized by its clear sea, the backdrop of the Velebit mountains, and a history rooted in defense and viticulture.

History
Ražanac has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with Stone Age artifacts and Liburnian graves found in the vicinity.

The Fortress (Kaštelina): Built in 1507 to protect the population from Ottoman attacks, its ruins still stand on the waterfront. It originally consisted of three towers connected by a wall.

Ljubljana Fortress: Located on a nearby peninsula, this medieval fortress once served as a seat for the Knights Templar and later the Hospitallers.

Parish Church: The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in 1856 in Neo-Romanesque style, dominates the village center.

Typical Foods & Drinks
The local cuisine is a classic example of the Dalmatian diet, focusing on fresh, local ingredients.

Ražanac Wine: The village is famous for its long tradition of winemaking. You can often buy quality homemade red and white wines directly from local families.

Fresh Fish: Being a fishing village, the daily catch (sea bream, sea bass, and squid) is a staple in local taverns.

Peka: A signature dish where lamb, veal, or octopus is slow-cooked with potatoes and herbs under a bell-like iron dome covered in embers.

Paški Sir: Due to its proximity to the island of Pag, the famous sheep’s milk cheese is a common local delicacy.

Nature & Beaches
The nature in Ražanac is defined by the Velebit Channel, which offers exceptionally clear water but can be subject to the Bura (a strong, cool wind from the mountains).

Beaches: The coastline is mostly pebble and rock. Popular spots include Puntica, Pisak, and Vlaški Kraj. The water is known for its high salinity and clarity.

Velebit View: The panoramic view of the massive Velebit mountain range across the sea is one of the most iconic sights in the region.

Activities & Festivals
Ražanacko Kolo: A traditional folk dance protected as intangible cultural heritage. If you visit during a festival, you may see locals performing it in traditional costumes.

Outdoor Sports: The area is a hub for cycling, hiking, and sea kayaking. Its proximity to Paklenica National Park (20 mins away) makes it a great base for rock climbing.

Fishermen’s Nights: Held during July and August, these local festivals feature live music, outdoor grilling of fresh fish, and local wine.

Shops & Practicalities
Ražanac is a functional municipal center, meaning it stays "alive" even outside the peak summer season.

Local Markets: Small stands often sell seasonal fruits, vegetables, honey, and olive oil.

Essentials: The village has several grocery stores (like Tommy or Studenac), a pharmacy, a post office, and a few ATMs.

Boutiques: You can find small shops selling handmade lace (influenced by nearby Pag) and local souvenirs.
