Ueckermünde, located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a historic port town and state-recognized seaside resort situated at the mouth of the Uecker River on the Oder Lagoon (Stettiner Haff).
History & Description
Origins: The name "Ueckermünde" translates to "mouth of the Uecker." It was founded by the Slavic tribe of the Ukrani (or Uchri) before 1200. The town was first documented in 1178 and awarded Lübeck town rights in 1260 by Duke Barnim I.
Royal & Military Past: It served as a residence for the Dukes of Pomerania, who built a fortified castle there in 1284. Throughout history, it saw Swedish, Prussian, and even French occupation. Notably, it was nearly destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, with only 15 inhabitants surviving.
Modern Era: In the 18th and 19th centuries, it flourished through iron foundries, brickworks, and shipbuilding. Today, it is a picturesque resort town known for its restored old town, historic harbor, and the Ueckermünde Castle, the last remaining castle of the Pomeranian dukes on German soil.
Typical Foods
The local cuisine is deeply influenced by its proximity to the water and the vast forests of the Ueckermünde Heath:
Seafood: Fresh and smoked fish from the lagoon and Baltic Sea are staples. Look for Bismarck Herring, eel in dill sauce, fried hornfish, and marinated fried herring (Bratheringe).
Game Meat: Venison, wild boar, and red deer from the surrounding forests are often served as hearty roasts or ragouts.
Regional Specialties: * Seabuckthorn (Sanddorn): Known as the "lemon of the north," used in nectars, cakes, and spirits.
Sweet & Sour Dishes: A regional favorite is roast pork stuffed with prunes.
Desserts: Rote Grütze (red berry compote) with vanilla sauce is the classic choice.
Activities & Nature
Water Sports: The lagoon offers excellent conditions for sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and surfing. You can also take tours on the Pomeranian Cog "Ucra", a reconstructed medieval trading ship.
