Cargèse, located on the west coast of Corsica, is uniquely known as "The Greek Village" due to its fascinating history and the coexistence of two distinct religious traditions.

History & Description
Cargèse’s identity was shaped in 1676 when a colony of around 700-800 Greeks from the Mani Peninsula (Peloponnese) fled Ottoman rule and settled in Corsica with the permission of the Republic of Genoa.

The Two Churches: The village is famous for its two 19th-century churches that face each other across a small valley. One is Saint-Spyridion (Greek-Byzantine rite), and the other is Saint-Mary of the Assumption (Latin Catholic rite). This setup is a symbol of the peaceful integration of the Greek community into Corsican life.

Description: Perched on a promontory overlooking the sea, Cargèse features white-washed houses, a picturesque fishing port, and a Mediterranean atmosphere. It is often described as a seaside resort that feels both Corsican and Greek.

Typical Foods & Gastronomy
The local cuisine blends traditional Corsican specialties with coastal flavors.

Corsican Must-Tries: * Charcuterie: Prisuttu (cured ham), Figatellu (liver sausage), and Lonzu.

Cheeses: Brocciu (fresh sheep/goat cheese) is used in everything from omelets with mint to Cannelloni.

Chestnut Specialties: Polenta made from chestnut flour (Pulenta) and desserts like Fiadone (cheesecake).

Local Influences: Being a coastal town, you will find excellent grilled fish, seafood, and Bouillarbasse (fish soup).

Local Spot: Le P'tit en K is often cited for its "Healthy Food" concept using garden-grown products.

Activities & Nature
Cargèse is an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts.

Beaches:

Pero Beach: Just north of the village, popular for its size and accessibility.

Chiuni Beach: Further north (7km), known for its fine sand and horse-riding activities.

Menasina Beach: A quieter, more secluded option south of the village.

Nature & Hiking:

Genoese Towers: Hike to the Tour d’Omigna or Tour d’Orchinu for panoramic views.

Mare e Monti: The village is a key stage on this famous "Sea and Mountain" trail linking Calenzana to Cargèse.

Marine Activities: Boat trips to the Scandola Nature Reserve and the Calanques de Piana (UNESCO sites) depart from the local marina.

Festivals & Events
Greek Easter (Semaine Sainte): This is the most famous event. It involves unique processions where the two rites (Latin and Greek) join together. On Easter Monday, a triumphal procession features musketry salutes and the blessing of the countryside.

Saint-Spyridion (Dec 12): The patronal feast of the Greek community.

Cargèse Sound Festival: A summer electronic music festival that attracts a young, international crowd to its beachside venues.

Saint-Alexandre (Sept): A celebration highlighting the town's ecclesiastical history.

Nature Spotlight
The coastline is marked by jagged rocky points topped with historic Genoese towers (Omigna, Orchinu, and Cargèse). The surrounding "maquis" (dense shrubland) provides the aromatic herbs (myrtle, rosemary, thyme) that define the scent of the region and the flavor of its honey and meats.
