Acquarossa is a picturesque municipality in the Blenio Valley (known as the "Sun Valley"), located in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It was formed in 2004 through the merger of nine smaller villages, making it the administrative capital of the district.
History
The name "Acquarossa" (literally "Red Water") comes from the iron-rich thermal springs found in the area, which have been known since the 19th century.
Ancient Roots: While the modern municipality is new, the constituent villages (like Dongio and Lottigna) date back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Spa Era: In the late 1800s, Acquarossa became a popular tourist resort due to its thermal baths. The historic Albergo Terme (Thermal Hotel) remains a landmark of this Belle Époque era.
The Railway: Between 1906 and 1973, a narrow-gauge railway connected Acquarossa to Biasca, facilitating the transport of tourists and goods.
Description & Nature
Acquarossa sits at an elevation of approximately 530 meters and is characterized by a blend of Mediterranean flair and Alpine ruggedness.
Landscape: The Blenio Valley is exceptionally green, featuring terraced vineyards, chestnut forests, and dramatic mountain peaks.
Climate: It enjoys a milder, sunnier climate than the northern Swiss Alps, often described as "the gateway to the south."
Key Landmark: The Church of San Carlo di Negrentino, a Romanesque masterpiece from the 11th century, sits high above the valley and is famous for its exceptionally preserved medieval frescoes.
