Fehmerland – The Sunshine Island in the Baltic Sea

Fehmerland is Germany’s third largest island, affectionately called the “Sunshine Island” (Sonneninsel) due to its many hours of sunshine each year. It floats in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein and acts as a geographical and cultural bridge between Germany and Denmark.

Landscape and atmosphere

Fehmerland is a prime holiday destination that is tailor-made for relaxation, fresh sea breezes and coastal charm. The island boasts around 78 kilometres of varied coastline. To the south you will find fine, white sandy beaches that are perfect for families, while the eastern shores offer dramatic, rugged cliffs. The flat, inland landscape is a patchwork of vast fields and historic windmills.

For visitors looking to book a holiday, the accommodation options are incredibly varied. You can find everything from cozy thatched-roof villas located in quiet maritime villages to modern beachside apartments in the central town of Burg. Whether you prefer luxurious self-catering villas with private saunas or a budget-friendly holiday apartment right near the surf schools, the island caters perfectly to independent travellers.

History of Fehmarn

The history of Fehmarn is deeply shaped by its strategic maritime location.

Slavic roots

In the early Middle Ages, the island was inhabited by the Slavic Wagri tribe. In fact, the name Fehmarn comes from the Slavic “fe more”, meaning “in the sea”.

Danish and German influence

For centuries, the island bounced back and forth between Danish and Schleswig-Holstein rule, until it finally became part of Prussia in 1864.

Rock history on Fehmarn

On a completely different historical note, Fehmarn was the site of rock legend Jimi Hendrix's last concert at the Open Air Love & Peace Festival on September 6, 1970, just days before his death. A memorial stone stands near Flügge Strand to mark the historic event.

Nature and wildlife

Fehmarn is an ecological treasure trove. Its location makes it a crucial resting place for millions of migratory birds every spring and autumn.

Wallnau Waterfowl Reserve

The crown jewel of the natural landscape is the Wallnau Waterfowl Reserve on the west coast. It covers almost 300 hectares of ponds, reed forests and meadows and is one of the most important ecological environments in Northern Germany.

Visitors can explore the area via hidden observation huts and a dedicated nature trail to spot some of the more than 250 bird species that visit the reserve.

Activities on Fehmarn

Fehmarn is widely considered the windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of Germany. With over ten different surf spots around the island, water sports enthusiasts flock here due to the ideal wind conditions.

Activities on the water

Windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling and deep-sea fishing are among the most popular activities on the island.

Activities on land

The island is completely flat, making it an absolute paradise for cycling. You can rent a bike and cycle for miles along the dikes, stopping at historic lighthouses like the Flügge Lighthouse.

Wellness and relaxation

On colder days, the FehMare pool complex on the south beach offers seawater waves and panoramic saunas with views of the Baltic Sea.

Typical foods on Fehmarn

The culinary scene is exactly what you would expect from a Baltic island – fresh, hearty and inspired by maritime traditions.

Fischbrötchen

The ultimate coastal snack. These crispy rolls are filled with freshly caught fish such as Bismarck herring, matjes, smoked salmon or hot fried fish topped with onions and remoulade.

Kröpel

Fehmarn's signature sweet treat consists of small traditional yeast dough balls, fried until golden and then rolled in sugar. They are often enjoyed with afternoon coffee.

Local seafood

Rich Baltic plaice (Scholle) and cod (Dorsch) are typically served pan-fried in butter and are among the island's most popular dishes.

Traditional hot drinks

After a breezy day by the water, locals often warm up with a Pharisäer – hot coffee with rum and whipped cream – or a classic hot rum grog.

Annual festivals on Fehmarn

Fehmarn loves to celebrate its culture, sports and seasons. If you plan your stay right, you can experience some of their big annual events.

Held in May, the festival celebrates the golden, blooming rapeseed fields of Petersdorf with live music, local crafts and the crowning of the flower queen.

Surf Festival and Foil Festival

These big events mark the start of the water sports season on the south beach with equipment testing, beach parties and live music.
