Marchesana is a scenic seaside village located in the municipality of Terme Vigliatore, on the northeastern coast of Sicily (Province of Messina). It is best known for its long sandy beaches and its strategic location between the lush Nebrodi mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering views of the nearby Aeolian Islands.

History & Description
Marchesana is a relatively modern seaside hamlet, but it is steeped in the broader history of the Messina region. Its name is tied to the historical land ownership of local noble families (the "Marchesi").

Atmosphere: Today, it is a quiet, family-friendly summer resort. The village is characterized by its wide lungomare (promenade), which is ideal for evening strolls (passeggiata).

Landscape: The town sits on a flat coastal strip with the backdrop of the Peloritani and Nebrodi mountain ranges. Its beach is a mix of golden sand and small pebbles, with crystal-clear waters that remain shallow for several meters, making it popular for families.

Typical Foods
The cuisine in Marchesana is a classic example of Messinese and Tyrrhenian traditions, heavily focused on fresh seafood and local agriculture.

Pasta con le Sarde: Pasta with fresh sardines, wild fennel, saffron, raisins, and pine nuts.

Pesce Spada alla Ghiotta: Swordfish (common in the Strait of Messina) cooked with tomatoes, capers, olives, and celery.

Arancini: In this region, they are often conical (shaped like Mt. Etna) and filled with a rich meat ragù and peas.

Granita & Brioche: A staple breakfast. Look for local flavors like lemon, coffee, or almond, served with a warm, buttery brioche col tuppo.

Pignolata: A typical sweet from the Messina area consisting of small fried dough balls covered in chocolate and lemon glaze.

Activities & Festivals
While Marchesana itself is peaceful, its proximity to larger hubs provides plenty of entertainment.

Activities:

Beach Life: Sunbathing and swimming are the primary draws. Many "Lidos" (beach clubs) provide umbrellas and bar service.

Sailing: The nearby Marina di Portorosa is one of the most prestigious tourist ports in the Mediterranean, perfect for renting a boat to the Aeolian Islands.

Thermal Baths: Just inland at Terme Vigliatore, you can visit the Parco delle Terme for therapeutic sulfur springs.

Festivals:

Festa di Maria SS. delle Grazie: Celebrated in Terme Vigliatore in early September with processions, music, and fireworks.

Summer Sagra: During August, the promenade often hosts "Sagre" (food festivals) dedicated to local products like swordfish or organic honey.

Nature & Surroundings
Marchesana serves as a gateway to some of Sicily’s most beautiful natural and archaeological sites.

Lakes of Marinello: Located near Tindari, this nature reserve features "moving" sandbars and brackish lakes beneath a towering cliff.

The Aeolian Islands: Ferries and private excursions depart daily from nearby Milazzo to Vulcano, Lipari, and Stromboli.

Sanctuary of Tindari: A short drive away, this site offers a Black Madonna shrine and a Greek theater with one of the most famous coastal views in Italy.

Nebrodi Regional Park: For hikers, the nearby mountains offer cool forests, waterfalls (like the Catafurco Falls), and a completely different climate from the coast.
