Pacengo is a charming and historic village nestled on the southeastern shore of Lake Garda, located approximately 5 km south of Lazise, of which it is a frazione (hamlet).
History & Description
Pacengo's history is ancient, with roots dating back to prehistoric times.
Ancient Roots: Archaeological finds in the harbor area, attributed to Count Arrigo Balladoro, revealed the remains of a large Neolithic pile dwelling village (stilt houses). This suggests human settlement has been present for millennia.
Name & Early History: The village was already known as Pacingus around the year 1000, likely derived from a Langobardic or Germanic origin, or perhaps the Latin Pagus (village) or Pax (peace). It developed historically as a small center for fishermen and a resting spot for merchants on the mythical amber road.
Military Significance: During the First Italian Independence War in 1848, Pacengo was the site of a conflict where the Piedmont Brigade put the Austrians to flight. Prince Ferdinand of Savoy was later hosted here during the siege of Peschiera del Garda.
Landmarks: Key architectural sites include the late 17th-century parish church, which houses notable paintings by Piatti and a polychrome marble altar. You can also admire several Renaissance villas of former nobles, such as the Villa of Count Balladoro, the Villa 'Bottona,' and Villa Catterinetti-Franco.
The Village Today: Today, Pacengo is known for its tranquil atmosphere, golden beaches, and the characteristic Porto Vecchio (Old Harbor), which is an ideal spot for sunbathing, a relaxing evening stroll, and lakeside dining.

The cuisine in Pacengo and the wider Lake Garda area is a rich blend of lake fish and high-quality local products, showcasing the area's unique Mediterranean microclimate.

Wine: The area is renowned for its wines, including the ruby-red Bardolino and its rosé version, Bardolino Chiaretto (excellent with fish), as well as the white wines Lugana and Custoza.
Carne Salada: A delicacy of cured, dry-marinated lean beef, typically served raw with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper, and parmesan flakes.
