Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park

Located in the Veneto region of northern Italy, the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park is a wilder, more untouched alternative to the glittering peaks of the central Dolomites. Established in 1990, it serves as a haven for biodiversity while also offering some of the most dramatic limestone landscapes in Europe.

History and background

Unlike the more famous areas with their many ski resorts, this park was created to protect a unique botanical heritage. During the last ice age, these peaks (known as the Pale Mountains) stood out above the glaciers. This allowed rare plants to survive here while they disappeared elsewhere, making it a "refuge" for ancient species. In 2009, the park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nature and landscapes

The park is a masterpiece of geological sculpture. You'll find deep gorges, high plateaus and jagged karst formations.

Flora: Home to over 1,500 species, including the rare Campanula morettiana (the park's symbol).

Fauna: It's a stronghold for golden eagles, chamois, mouflons and marmots.

Key attractions: Vette di Feltre and Cadini del Brenton - a series of deep green pools carved by the San Falier stream.

The holiday experience: Description and accommodation

If you're dreaming of an authentic Italian holiday, the park offers a refined "slow tourism" atmosphere. Imagine waking up in one of the many charming stone villas or renovated historic properties that line the edge of the park near Feltre or Belluno.

A holiday here isn't about overcrowded tourist traps; it's about the luxury of silence. Whether you choose a private villa with panoramic views of the Schiara group or a cozy mountain hut, the architecture often blends traditional wood and stone with modern comforts. It is the perfect holiday base for those who want to spend their mornings hiking and their afternoons sipping Prosecco in a secluded garden.

Activities

Hiking and trekking: The famous Alta Via No. 1 begins right in the heart of these mountains.

Canyoning: Val del Mis offers world-class locations for those looking for an adrenaline rush in crystal-clear waters.

Cycling: From challenging mountain bike routes to the gentler "Lunga Via delle Dolomiti" trail.

Photography: Alpenglow (Enrosadira) colors the peaks pink and purple at sunset, providing a spectacular show for both hobbyists and professionals.
