History and Heritage
Origin of the Name: The name of the commune is thought to come from "aiguillon" (a long stick used to drive oxen) and "via" (Latin word for way/road), suggesting a location on an ancient route.
Ancient Traces: There are traces of very old life, notably a Neolithic polisher at La Brelaudière, used to polish stone axes around 5000 B.C.
Built Heritage: The 12th-century Romanesque church, listed as a monument, is an important site, although it was redesigned in the 19th century.
Restored Local Heritage: Efforts have been made to restore minor heritage elements, such as a bread oven and the old wash house (renovated and labeled "Vendéen" in 1993).
Description and Nature
Location: L'Aiguillon-sur-Vie is ideally situated in the Vendée's inland area, between land and sea, just a few kilometers from the coast (Brétignolles-sur-Mer and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie).
Hydrography: The commune is located on the right bank of the Jaunay river.
Lac du Jaunay: This lake is a large drinking water reserve covering 114 hectares and stretching over 8 km, offering magnificent landscapes and outdoor activity opportunities.
Typical Foods (Vendéen Specialties)
Although L'Aiguillon-sur-Vie is inland, it benefits from the rich culinary traditions of the Vendée region:
Savory:
Le Préfou: Flat bread topped with garlicky butter, often served warm as an appetizer.
Vendée Ham and Mogettes: The famous raw ham, salted and hand-rubbed, traditionally served with mogettes (IGP white beans), often eaten on toast ("grillée").
Sweet:
Vendéenne Brioche and Gâche: Soft pastries; the brioche is hand-braided, and the gâche is oval-shaped and made with fresh cream.
Tourtisseaux (or Bottereaux): Leavened dough fritters, traditionally prepared for Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras).
Drinks:
Troussepinette (or Kiki Vendéen): A typical aperitif made from wine and brandy in which young blackthorn shoots are macerated.
Kamok: Coffee liqueur based on roasted Arabica beans.
