Located in the heart of the Salzkammergut region, Traunsee is Austria's deepest lake (204 metres) and a masterpiece of alpine beauty. Whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush in the mountains or a quiet retreat in a lakeside villa, Traunsee offers a quintessentially Austrian experience.

History and Heritage

Known by the Romans as Lacus Felix (the happy lake), Traunsee has been a centre of salt trade and aristocracy for centuries.

Gmunden: The Pottery Town

On the northern shore, the town has been producing its iconic green-and-white pottery since 1492.

Schloss Ort

One of the most photographed places in Austria. This 10th-century white fortress is situated on a small island connected by a wooden bridge.

Traunkirchen

A historic peninsula with the "Fisherman's Pulpit" in the parish church, carved in 1753 to depict the Miracle of the Fish.

Nature and Landscapes

The lake is dominated by the Traunstein (1,691 m), a massive limestone protector often called the "Guardian of the Salzkammergut".

Feuerkogel

This high plateau, accessible by cable car, offers 360-degree views and is a sun-drenched paradise, even when the valley is foggy.

The Water

Crystal clear and of drinking water quality, supplied by fresh mountain springs

Typical dishes

Austrian hospitality is best served on a plate. When dining near the lake, look for:

Steckerlfisch: Freshly caught fish (usually coregonus or char) grilled on a stick over an open fire.

Gmundner Keramik-Torte: A specialty cake inspired by the local pottery.

Kaspressknödel: Savory cheese dumplings served in a clear broth or with sauerkraut.

Activities and Festivals

Traunsee is a playground for all seasons:

Summer and Winter

Sailing and windsurfing are top-notch here due to the reliable thermal winds. For a slower pace, take a cruise on the Gisela, one of the world's oldest coal-fired paddle steamers. In winter, Feuerkogel transforms into a family-friendly ski resort, and the Gmunden Christmas Market is legendary for its floating Advent stars.

Local Festivals

The Pottery Market (Töpfermarkt) is held every August and attracts hundreds of artists from all over Europe. The Glöcklerlauf is a traditional Epiphany (January 5) run with giant illuminated headdresses that chase away the winter spirit.
