Lauwersoog: A unique gem on the Wadden Sea

Lauwersoog is a unique gem located on the edge of the Wadden Sea, where the province of Groningen meets Friesland. It is a place where the air smells of salt and the horizon seems to stretch forever.

History and description

Lauwersoog did not originally exist as a village. It was born from the completion of the Lauwerszee dike in 1969, an engineering feat that transformed a dangerous tidal inlet into the calm Lauwersmeer lake to prevent flooding. Today, it is a busy, working port and gateway to the islands. The atmosphere is pure maritime escape - think sturdy fishing boats, a magnificent sea view and the distinct holiday feeling of leaving the "real world". Whether you are looking for a peaceful holiday or a rugged adventure, the village serves as the perfect hideaway between the wild sea and the serene lake.

Typical foods

You can't visit Lauwersoog without eating something that was in the water a few hours before.

Kibbeling: Pieces of breaded, deep-fried white fish served with garlic sauce.

Hollandse Nieuwe: Fresh raw herring, typically eaten with onions.

Smoked eel (Paling): A local delicacy often found at the harbour stalls.

Wadden Sea mussels: Plump, salty and best enjoyed with a local beer.

Nature and activities

Lauwersoog is located within the Lauwersmeer National Park, a world-class destination for nature lovers.

Waddle Walks (Wadlopen): A surreal experience of walking on the seabed at low tide.

Dark Sky Park: One of the few places in Europe where it is dark enough to see the Milky Way clearly.

Birdwatching: Home to white-tailed eagles, spoonbills and thousands of migratory birds.

Watersports: Sailing, windsurfing and swimming in the calm Lauwersmeer waters.

Seal watching: Take a boat trip from the harbour to see seals sunning themselves on the sandbanks.

Shops and festivals

Although Lauwersoog is not a high street shopping destination, it does offer specialist maritime finds:

Fish market: Visit Visafslag Lauwersoog for the freshest catch or Waddenwinkel for local regional products such as sea buckthorn jam and honey.

Outdoor gear: Shops catering to sailors and walkers are scattered around the marina.

Important festivals

Fishery Day (Dag van de Visserij): Usually held on Whitsun, the harbour is transformed with music, markets and tours of fishing vessels.

Lifeboat Day: A chance to see the KNRM (Royal Netherlands Maritime Rescue Service) in action.
