Abertamy is a small town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, situated in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory).
History and Description
Location and Setting: Located about 15 km north of the spa city of Karlovy Vary, Abertamy is a mountain town with an elevation of around 840–900 meters.
Mining Past: The town's history, dating back to its first written mention in 1529, is closely tied to the discovery of silver and tin ores. It was promoted to a royal mining town in 1579. This rich mining history is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Erzgebirge/Krušnohorí Mining Region."
Industry Shift: Following the decline of mining after the Thirty Years' War, the local economy shifted, becoming famous for lace-making and the production of high-quality leather gloves in the mid-19th and 20th centuries.
Post-WWII: After the war, the area saw intensive uranium mining, and a large part of the German-speaking population was expelled. The glove factory closed in 1998.
