History: From Vikings to Royal Retreats

East England's history is a tapestry of invasion and innovation. It was the heart of the Kingdom of the East Angles and later became an important part of the Danelaw during Viking rule.

The Middle Ages

This was one of the richest parts of England due to the thriving wool trade. You can still see "wool churches" - massive, ornate churches in small villages - reflecting this medieval wealth.

The Civil War

It was a stronghold for the Parliamentarians, led by Oliver Cromwell (who was born in Huntingdon).

Maritime power

The coast has always been vital, from Great Yarmouth's herring fishing history to Harwich's naval importance.
