History & Origins
Carlazzo is a comune in Lombardy, in the Province of Como, roughly 60 km north of Milan and ~25 km north of the city of Como.
The name “Carlazzo” comes from the medieval Latin castellaceum, from castrum (castle/fortress). Over time the “s” changed to “r” (a dissimilation process).
There is a fraction (subdivision) called Castello which holds remains of old fortification, consistent with the etymology.
The area was inhabited since prehistoric times — for example, a polished stone axe was found in the region.
In Roman times, this region was under the influence of the Via Regina (a Roman road).
Over centuries, administrative alignments changed: Carlazzo was part of the Pieve (parish/district) of Porlezza under the Duchy of Milan.
In 1757 the then-separate Castello joined Carlazzo; later, under Napoleonic reorganization, other small localities were aggregated and then, after the restoration, some divisions were reversed.
From 1884 to 1939 there was a railway stop called Stazione di San Pietro (Carlazzo) on the Menaggio–Porlezza line, serving the San Pietro Sovera area.
Today, that railway is defunct; the station building has been converted to a private residence.
So Carlazzo is a village with deep roots, located in a valley area with strategic passes and borderlands, influenced by Roman, medieval, and modern administrative shifts.
Description & Character
Carlazzo sits in Val Menaggio / Val Cavargna, between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, and overlooks a small lake called Lago di Piano.
It has a small population (a few thousand) and covers about 12.7 km².
The terrain is mountainous / hilly, with valleys, streams, forests and high passes.
A notable stream is the Cuccio, which flows through Val Cavargna and passes near Carlazzo, forming short gorges in parts.
The setting gives it a blend of mountainous and lacustrine (lake) character — accessible to both water and highland nature.
