Anneville-sur-Mer is a small former commune in the Manche department, in Normandy, in north-western France. It was merged into the new commune of Gouville-sur-Mer on 1 January 2019.
The name comes from a Norse/Scandinavian personal name “Ásleikr” adapted in Normandy (Ansle(c)cus etc.), plus ville (domain) so meaning something like “Ásleikr’s estate/village”. The “-sur-Mer” (on Sea) was added in 1830 when the commune was reconstituted after having been merged temporarily with Geffosses.
Key landmarks: the church of Saint-Samson, of Romanesque origin, later modified; some old wayside crosses; the traces of an old windmill; formerly, a manor (Manoir de Becquetière), once owned by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, though that manor has since been destroyed.
Location: on the western coast of Manche, on the “côte des Havres”. It borders the havre de Geffosses (Geffosses inlet) and is crossed by small streams (“ruisseau de Bretteville” and “le Canal”).
Natural highlights & activities:
Plage d’Anneville-sur-Mer: a sandy beach, quite wild, bordered by dunes. It is calm and less crowded — good for relaxation, walks, swimming.
Havre de Geffosses: an inlet with estuarial landscapes, birdlife, marshes. Excellent for observation of migrating water birds and for nature walks.
Nearby beaches of Gouville-sur-Mer and the central Gouville ones. Also the Sénéquet lighthouse (Phare du Sénéquet) is visible offshore from Gouville, adds to the coastal scenery.
Walking/hiking: along the GR 223, the dunes, the coastline, through the havre de Geffosses.
Bird watching at the inlet / marshes.
Beach activities: swimming, sunbathing, dog-friendly walks (outside high-tourism periods).
Water sports: in the wider Gouville-sur-Mer area – possibly windsurfing, kite surfing, etc. Some rental or sport offerings may be seasonal.
