Location: Klenovica is a small fishing village on the Adriatic coast, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia. It lies between Senj and Novi Vinodolski, about 6-10 km by road SE of Novi Vinodolski.
First documented mention in 1388, in the Statute of Senj.
The hamlet Žrnovnica (part of Klenovica) is mentioned in 1455 (with watermills under Ledenice).
The area was long part of the Vinodol region; its inhabitants historically relied heavily on fishing, seafaring, and using the natural coastline & fresh water sources.
Name / Past: Once known by a name like “Krmpocana” (reflecting the larger Krmpote area) in some older sources.
Modern use: Today tourism is central. While fishing is still part of local identity, many residents work in or cater to tourists. Clean sea, natural scenery, mild climate help as well.
Pebbly and rocky beaches, some natural bays.
Freshwater springs flow into the sea (notably in the bay of Žrnovnica). These mix with salt water, creating brackish conditions favourable for marine life.
Behind Klenovica there is rough terrain: karst formations, grey rock, degraded karst woodlands. Species include field maple, downy oak, hop hornbeam, oriental hornbeam, black ash.
Vegetation: some reforested black pine; natural groves in parts.
Nearby mountains: The Velebit & Kapela ranges form part of the backdrop; elevations up to ~1146 m.
Climate: Mediterranean with mild winters, warm summers. Proximity to mountain slopes can cause breezes, cooler fresh water inflows especially near springs.
Given its coastal, fishing village nature + hinterland influences, cuisine in Klenovica / Vinodol combines seafood with more “mountain/herbal/wild” ingredients.
Seafood focus: Fresh fish, grilled or “from the net to plate”, scampi (local larger ones from the Vinodol Channel), oysters, mussels, silver salmon.
Other coastal / Mediterranean ingredients:
Olive oil, aromatic herbs (wild fennel, arugula, wild asparagus, herbs from the karst)
Some sweets / pastries: e.g. Frankopan cake (named after the local Frankopan noble family), Bribir prisnac, Crikveniške rupice (a type of pastry), batuda, puhanci etc.
The “oily fish route” is part of the local gastronomy: oily fish (blue fish), grilled or in dishes.
Restaurants in Klenovica: There are several (“Pod Orajom” directly in the harbour is highlighted), plus pizzerias, bars, smaller taverns, places that try to preserve the fishing tradition in their menu.
Beaches & swimming: The sea is clear; the mixing with freshwater springs can make parts more refreshing. Good for swimming, snorkeling.
Boating / small boats: Exploring nearby bays, perhaps accessing small coves or peninsulas by boat (or walking).
Fishing: Traditional fishing is part of local culture; might be possible to do recreational / sport fishing.
Hiking / nature walks: Into the hills/mountains behind; vantage points looking down to sea; exploring the karst landscape; perhaps trails toward Velebit.
Wildlife / marine life: Possibly seeing dolphins occasionally; flora / fauna under/near water and in coastal - brackish zones.
Visiting nearby historic / cultural attractions:
Novi Vinodolski (town centre, old town) for markets, festivals, cultural events.
Other local sites in Vinodol region, e.g. Drivenik Castle in the hills near.
Klenovica is small, but has:
Several small restaurants, a pizzeria.
Shops for daily needs (groceries, small markets) & bakery.
Because it’s a small place, for more varied shopping or nightlife you’d go to larger nearby towns (e.g. Novi Vinodolski, Crikvenica) or drive.
Festivals / Local Events & Culture
While Klenovica itself is relatively small, it participates or is nearby many events linked to Novi Vinodolski / Vinodol region. Some highlights:
Carnival (Mesopust) – Traditional events before Lent, including masked processions, dances. Villages around (including Klenovica) take part.
Okolotorno – Held in Novi Vinodolski in summer (July / August), involving the old town, music, food, crafts.
Sails of Vinodol – A sailing event in mid-August in the port of Novi Vinodolski, with sea-related festivities, local food.
Fešta od kilometra (Feast of the Kilometer) – along the coast of Novi Vinodolski, a long food-and-music promenade.
Ružica Vinodola – Event linked to grape harvest etc., local music, wine & food.
Scampi Festival – A newer food-wine-gastronomy festival around the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera, celebrating scampi and local seafood.
