Rukavac is a village in western Croatia, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Matulji.
Population is about 830-850 (recent census) people.
Area about 12.6 km².
Elevation is around ~280-370 m above sea level, depending on part of the village.
It’s quite close to Opatija (a notable resort town) and Matulji, so Rukavac benefits from nearness to those larger/ more touristy centers.

The region has had a blend of influences: Venetian, Habsburg (Austrian), Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and then Yugoslavian, and modern Croatia. These have left architectural, cultural, and linguistic imprints in many of the settlements around Opatija & Matulji. (While I didn't find specific events centered in Rukavac, it would have shared in regional trends: rural-Mediterranean agriculture, forestry, small-scale farming, later tourism, etc.)
Matulji (“Mattuglie” in Italian) shows in historical sources. The development of Opatija as a resort (19th-20th century) expanded infrastructure in the wider area, benefiting nearby villages.
Nature & Landscape
Since it’s in the foothills above Opatija, you get views over the Adriatic sea, mixed forest, Mediterranean plants, and hilly terrain. Perfect for hiking walks.
The proximity to Ucka (a mountain massif) means trails and more rugged landscapes are accessible.
Also, being near the coast gives access to beaches, sea promenades, and marine-scenery.
Foods & Cuisine
Seafood: fresh fish, shellfish, grilled fish, fish stews.
Italian & Central European influences: pasta, risottos, polenta, perhaps dishes with rosemary, olive oil, garlic.
Traditional inland / rural fare: meats, smoked or cured meats, hearty soups, bread.
Regional sweets, seasonal fruits, perhaps local wine.
Also, typical Croatian dishes more broadly that you'd likely find in restaurants around Opatija or Matulji: Peka (meat or fish cooked under a bell-lid, with vegetables), Buzara (seafood in garlic, wine, tomato), Brodetto fish stew, black risotto, grilled fish.
Activities
Given its location, some things to do:
Hiking / walking in the hills around Rukavac, exploring forest trails.
Beach / sea activities in nearby coastal towns of Opatija, or along the Adriatic. Swimming, snorkeling, coastal promenades.
Visit Opatija: promenades (Lungomare), historic villas, parks (like Park Angiolina), the “Maiden with the Seagull” statue.
Using Rukavac as a quiet base to explore the wider Kvarner region: Rijeka, the coast, the nearby mountains.
Shops & Local Services
In villages of this size, you’ll have small local shops (groceries, maybe a bakery, butcher) for everyday goods.
For larger supermarket chains, boutiques, more varied dining, etc., you'd travel to Matulji or Opatija.
Festivals & Culture
Matulji area is known for Zvoncari (traditional masked performers) during carnival time.
Regional events: local fairs, perhaps food festivals, religious/saint day celebrations common in Croatian villages.
In Opatija more broadly there are concerts, summer events, cultural festivals. Being close means residents of Rukavac can take part.
