Origins: Okehampton dates back to Saxon times and was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086).

Medieval significance: It became an important wool trading center in the Middle Ages.

Okehampton Castle: Built soon after the Norman Conquest, it became the largest castle in Devon and was later owned by the powerful Courtenay family. It was eventually abandoned after the 16th century.

Railway influence: The town prospered further with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, although the line was closed in the 1960s. In recent years, rail service was restored, improving access to the town.
