Beekbergen: A Gem in the Veluwe

Located on the edge of the scenic Veluwe, Beekbergen is a charming Dutch village that perfectly balances a peaceful, rustic atmosphere with a touch of "get-it-done". It's the kind of place where the air smells of pine needles and the pace of life slows down just enough for you to notice the squirrels.

Description and Holiday Atmosphere

Beekbergen is the ultimate forest retreat. When you arrive, you'll find a picturesque village of thatched cottages and cozy holiday homes tucked away in the greenery. Whether you're looking for a staycation in a luxury villa or a holiday in a small house, the atmosphere is undeniably "gezellig" (the unique Dutch word for cozy and welcoming). It's a place for a carefree holiday, where you can swap the sirens of the city for the "whistle and hiss" of a passing steam train.

History

Old roots

The village dates back to at least the 11th century. Its landmark, the Hervormde Kerk, is a 15th-century church that stands as a silent witness to centuries of history.

Paper & Water

Beekbergen was once a hub for the paper industry. The "Oude Beek" (Old Brook) powered several watermills that were used for paper production, thanks to the Veluwe's exceptionally clean groundwater.

The Steam Railway

It remains an important stop for the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij (VSM), a historic steam railway that has been whizzing through the countryside since the 1970s.

Typical foods

The Veluwe region is famous for its hearty, earthy flavors.

Local Specialties

Game: During the autumn “game season,” local restaurants serve up exquisite game, wild boar, and pheasant.

Gelderse Rookworst: A traditional smoked sausage that’s far superior to anything you’ll find in a vacuum sealer.

Pancakes (Pannenkoeken): A staple of any visitor. Nearby restaurants like De Pannekoek serve them in dinner sizes with everything from bacon to apples.

Mustard Soup (Mosterdsoep): A creamy, spicy local favorite, often topped with crispy bacon bits.

Activities and Nature

Outdoor Experiences

Loenen Waterfall: Just a stone’s throw away is the highest waterfall in the Netherlands (a modest but beautiful 15-meter drop).

Steam Train: Take a nostalgic ride on the VSM steam train to Dieren or Apeldoorn.

Wildlife spotting: Head into the Hoge Veluwe National Park to see red deer, wild boar and mouflon (wild sheep).

Cycling: The area is a maze of dedicated cycle paths. You can cycle along the "8 Slotte Route" or drive through Kootwijkerzand, often called the "Sahara of the North".

Shops and festivals

Shopping

Although Beekbergen is small, it has charming local shops and craft shops. For a more extensive shopping trip, the city of Apeldoorn is just 15 minutes away.

Events and festivals

Terug naar Toen (Back to the Past): This is the largest steam festival in the country, usually held in September, and features dozens of functional steam locomotives.

Light Safari: In nearby Beekse Bergen (winter months), you can walk through a spectacular route of light installations.

Christmas markets: In December, the village and nearby castles (such as Paleis Het Loo) are transformed into winter fairylandscapes.
