Hulshorst: A hidden gem in the Veluwe

Hulshorst is a hidden gem tucked away in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands. It’s the kind of place where the pace of life slows down, making it a perfect getaway for those who prefer birdsong to the noise of the city.

A glimpse into the past

Hulshorst’s history is deeply rooted in agriculture and its battle against the elements. Historically, it was a farming community that constantly alternated between the fertile peat bogs and the intrusive sands of the Veluwe. One of its most famous historical residents was the painter Andreas Schelfhout, who captured the village’s rugged beauty in the 19th century. Today, you can still see traditional northern Veluwe farms that have stood the test of time.

The village atmosphere

Imagine a peaceful holiday where the air smells of pine and heather. Hulshorst is a "linear village", meaning it stretches along a main road, surrounded by a patchwork of meadows and dense forests. Whether you're looking for a relaxing break or an active holiday, the landscape provides a stunning backdrop. It's characterised by its quiet alleys, thatched roofs and a distinct sense of Dutch "gezelligheid" (coziness).

Nature: Where the forest meets the sand

Hulshorst is situated at a unique geographical crossroads:

Leuvenumse Bos: A lush forest, perfect for shady walks.

Hulshorster Zand: One of the few active sand drift areas in Europe. It resembles a miniature desert and offers a surreal landscape for hikers.

Veluwemeer: ??Just a stone's throw away, this lake is ideal for water sports and cooling off.

Activities and things to do

If you're visiting for a weekend trip, you won't run out of things to do:

Cycling: "Fietsknooppunten" (bicycle hubs) allow you to easily navigate through the forest.

Wildlife watching: If you're quiet, you might spot red deer, wild boar or a wild fox.

Windsurfing: Head to the nearby beaches of Nulde or Horst on the Veluwemeer.

Local flavours

The cuisine here is hearty and reflects the "wild" nature of the Veluwe.

Wildpluk (Forage): Mushrooms and berries are local staples.

Wild season: In autumn, local eateries serve exquisite venison and wild boar stews.

Veluwse Heuning: Local heather honey, thick and rich.

Pannenkoeken: You'll find traditional pancake houses nearby - a Dutch classic you have to try.

Shops and festivals

Hulshorst is small, so it keeps things boutique and local.

Shops: Don't expect large shopping malls. Instead, look for farm shops (landwinkels) selling fresh cheese, eggs and regional crafts. For serious shopping, the nearby town of Nunspeet is just a few minutes away.

Festivals: Village life is all about community. You'll find local harvest markets in late summer and the "Veluwese Avonden" (Veluwe Evenings), which celebrate traditional music, crafts and old-fashioned costumes.
