Lochem: A Hidden Gem in the Achterhoek

Lochem is a hidden gem in the Achterhoek region of eastern Holland. It is a place where medieval history meets rolling hills, making it a perfect place for those seeking a quiet, authentic Dutch experience.

History: A step back in time

Lochem received its city rights in 1233, making it one of the older towns in the region. Historically, it was a fortified "country town," and you can still see remnants of its defensive past in the layout of the old center. The town has survived several sieges, most notably during the 80 Years' War. Today, its cultural heritage is beautifully preserved in landmarks such as St. Gudulakerk, a late Gothic church with a tower that offers panoramic views of the Gelderland countryside.

Description and holiday atmosphere

Lochem is the essential holiday destination for those who love the "Cittaslow" (slow city) lifestyle. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, characterized by cobblestone streets and historic facades. It feels like a permanent vacation, where the pace of life slows down as soon as you step into the town square. Whether you are looking for a relaxing break or an active tour, the town serves as an ideal base for a holiday exploring the rustic charm of the Dutch hinterland.

Typical foods

Lochem embraces the hearty, seasonal flavors of the Achterhoek.

Wild meat (Wildseizoen): In the fall, the region is famous for its game dishes, such as venison or wild boar, often served in local inns.

Rookworst: A smoked sausage originating from the Gelderland province - best enjoyed with stamppot (mashed potatoes and vegetables).

Kruidkoek: A spicy, gingerbread-like cake, often served with a thick layer of butter.

Poffertjes & Stroopwafels: You’ll find these classic Dutch treats at local markets, especially during the festive season.

Activities & Nature

Nature is the star of the show here. The town is located at the foot of the Lochemse Berg, a 49-meter-high hill (quite a tall one for the Netherlands!), covered in dense forest.

Hiking and cycling trails: The “Klompenpaden” (clog paths) are scenic hiking trails that take you through farmland, estates and forests.

Kasteel Verwolde: This noble house is located in nearby Laren and has an exquisite interior and a garden that houses the thickest oak tree in the Netherlands.

Staringkoepel: A romantic 19th-century tea house on the banks of the Berkel River, only accessible by a small foot ferry.

Shops and Festivals

Boutique Shopping: The town centre is filled with independent shops, local artisans and specialist gift shops, offering a more personal experience than the city's shopping centres.

Bachweken Lochem: A high-profile annual festival held in March/April, celebrating the music of J.S. Bach at various historic sites.

Keidagen: A lively five-day festival held around Ascension Day with parades, music and a market.

Christmas Markets: In December, the town is transformed with twinkling lights and stalls, perfect for buying handmade decorations.
